About the Author

Jos Stam is a senior research scientist with Autodesk. He was born in the Netherlands and educated in Geneva, Switzerland, where he received dual bachelor degrees in computer science and pure mathematics. In 1989 he moved to Toronto, where he completed his master’s and PhD in computer science. His research spans several areas of computer graphics: natural phenomena, physics-based simulation, rendering, and surface modeling, especially subdivision surfaces. He has published papers in all of these areas in journals and at conferences. In 2005 he received the SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Achievement Award, one of the most prestigious awards in computer graphics. He also won two Technical Achievement Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science and has been featured in Wired magazine.

Great book, wrong publisher.

This is a great book. Computational fluid dynamics is not easy and there are very few, if any, math or physics books that cover the material with real implementation in mind - the few I've come across are terribly boring. This is a different kind of book and is a nice supplement to the author's well-known paper on implementing fluid solvers.

The missing star is for the choice of publisher and quality of the illustrations..... CRC Press is hardly coding hacker mainstream and is very expensive. Some of the illustrations/images are of very poor quality, as are some of the code listings.

Still, a very good guide to getting started with fluid animation.

Luciano Alves

Luciano Alves is Brazilian. He lives in the city of Porto Alegre in southern Brazil. He has been a Zabbix evangelist since 2007. Since 1994, he has been working to support the ICT infrastructure using his expertise in targeting and monitoring platforms. Luciano has had Zabbix professional certifications since 2008, and in 2012, he became one of the first official instructors outside of Zabbix SIA. He has trained over 200 professionals from different countries (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Ecuador, Chile, Spain, and Colombia) to work with the Zabbix monitoring platform. He is the founder of Unirede Solucoes Corporativas, one of the main global partners of Zabbix SIA and currently the only premium partner in all of the Americas. Luciano is also a speaker at open source events, always talking about Zabbix. Not only performance help also helpfull as general overview

What I like most about this book is that it is short and quickly to read. But it is full of helpfull informations regarding Zabbix perfomance AND the Zabbix structure in total. So no bla bla around the information.
The booked helped me as an "experienced starter" with Zabbix to get a better picture what is in which relation to all the other components of the system.
So it is worth not only if you have performance issues but also to get a good background on all the Zabbix components.
The tips and things to considere are all clear and can be directly used even the author says that the exact tuning values depends on your structure. But you can copy them to your site and from the book you learn how to tweak them for you and how to monitor them. As my team mate is the Zabbix pro I trusted him a lot but after reading this book I found a lot of things we could have done better from the start. And chaning them now helped us to avoid some pitfalls.
So even if the content seems to be for the Zabbix pros it will help us beginners also very good.

Must have for every Zabbix Administrator, approaches every aspect with good detail

It covers all must know topics and components:
- Database
- Zabbix server
- Zabbix proxy
- Items and triggers
- Storage
- Webserver
- Php
- Operating system

It describes in higher details how every component interact with each other, how to estimate the size of your infrastructure, hardware for each piece, predict database and organic growth. How to construct and customize templates, why you should do it, how to monitor Zabbix health, and so on.

If you already manage a big environment, you can get new ideas, consolidate others and find new ways to improve.
If you don't, it will be of great help to get to know some best practices, learn to avoid some problems and/or how to deal with some that you still hit.

I almost took one star off of it because of when the book approaches the DBSyncer parameter, it's not mentioned how it does behave in great detail. What the book misses, is that DBSyncer does so by locking HistoryCache by itemid, calculates trends. Sometimes it does generate a bottleneck and does not perform well enough. This is hard to monitor, but still very important. It's better described on https://support.zabbix.com/browse/ZBX-9201.

Still a great book, though. With it, got few new insights, adopted the use of php accelerators and validated many other aspects of current implementation.

An must read for every Zabbix administrator/user

This is an very good book about tuning your Zabbix environment. Most books about Zabbix will explain how you monitor environment with items, triggers and web scenarios and how you should do this. But this book will only talk about these things when it is related about performance. Why for example is ".last()" better for performance instead of using "avg()"?. Also your environment/hardware where Zabbix is installed is described in this book. The database is very important in your setup and a whole chapter on tuning is dedicated to this.

I personally liked the chapters "Chapter 3: Tuning the Zabbix Server" and "Chapter 10: Monitoring the Health of Zabbix". Chapter 3 is about the triggers I mentioned earlier and buffers and caches. I never found some clear information about these caches and buffers and what they do. Chapter 10 is about the health of Zabbix itself and basically describes the "Template App Zabbix Server" (And Proxy) templates in Zabbix what they mention/do.

The author mentioned why he only focused on performance tuning for MySQL, but it would be nice in next releases if there is an chapter about tuning the PostgreSQL database. I was lucky, but I know people who have PostgreSQL as database server who can skip an chapter in this book.

I really liked reading this book and is written very nice. I will definitely recommend this book to other Zabbix administrators/users.

Math Textbook

This book is easy to read, however, the lessons do not always explain the math adequately and not all the practice problem answers are in the back. It does have plenty of examples for each concept and builds nicely on each idea.

I was pleased with the speed at which they shipped my item. The only thing that I did not like was the book seemed to be very tacky and dirty on outside. It also smelled like a cigerette. I believe I can work past that. I would reccomend this place to others. Book overall was in real good shape.

One of the best novelizations I've read

Sometimes I wonder why Max Allan Collins doesn't write the scripts of the films he novelizes. His entries in the genre, including In the Line of Fire and Dick Tracy,often have better dialogue and more fleshed out characters than the films themselves (though in the character department, you couldn't really improve on In the Line of Fire). His novel Air Force One is the book the movie should have been based on. I really enjoyed the film, but, having read this fine book, I think I would have believed the film more if it was, I don't know, more like the novel! As you read the book, you'll discover there are scenes and dialogue you wish were in the film (the sequence where President James Marshall drinks a beer before takeoff becomes a funny discourse with his aides over the political mileage the President could get from drinking Russian beer as opposed to Heineken), and best of all, the characters and there motivations are a good deal more believable, somehow, on the printed page than on the silver screen, maybe because a writer can just write things as exposition that a screenwriter can't put effectively into dialogue. I've always enjoyed Mr. Collins' work, especially his series of historical mysteries about private eye Nathan Heller, and this is a great addition to his body of work. Most of the people I know would think themselves above movie novelizations, but this one is a terrific book anybody'd be glad to have read. I know I was.

Very interesting and filled with suspense

Read the book, it was great, saw the movie and it was good, but nothing compared to the book.... In the book, Terrorists seize Air Force One with the president, the first lady, their thirteen-year-old daughter, and more than fifty staff members.
The terrorists threaten to execute a hostage every thirty minutes if their demands are not met. Washington has a NO HOSTAGE policy and they refuse to give in to the terrorists demands. The suspense escalates from there... The president is left to protect his family with the help of some of his staff.
This is great reading material. I read it while on a nine hour flight, so that made it more intense...

The line of the book is when the Vice-President (Katherine Bennet) is talking to the President James Marshell about negotiating with the terrosits. and James says, " Katherine if you give a mouse a cookie...." Then Katherine replays,".....He is going to want a glass of milk." What does that mean to you

Bad Printing! Unusable.

Make sure you go through this book in entirety after purchasing. i just realized, after a few months of owning, that the page progression is out of number. my copy goes from page 200 to page 400 back to 230; etc... and its not returnable. there are also many blank pages at the end.

About the Author

Jeane W. Anastas is a professor at New York University's Silver School of Social Work and a recipient of the Council on Social Work Education's award for Greatest Recent Contribution to Social Work Education. She has more than twenty-five years of experience in social work education and has served in organizational leadership roles in professional social work, social work research, and women's issues in social work.
