Necessary for class but it actually turned out to be a good book as well

If you have bought nursing books before you know some can be really bad and hard to even read. This book was necessary for my nursing class but I purchased a early edition and saved about $90 bucks. I used the early edition for the class with no issues at all regarding content. It is actually well written and therefore finding the information you need right away is easy. I appreciate the table of contents being very accurate and informative when looking for specifics. Chapters are arranged how you would expect them. The writing itself is enjoyable and flows smoothly.

Tom Stevenson has been writing about wine for more than 30 years and is regarded as the world's leading authority on Champagne. Recently updated: A great overview of sparkling wines of the world.

This text covers sparkling wines from every major wine producing country in the world. The bulk of the text does cover Champagne, and there are large sections devoted to Sekt, Cava, and Italian sparkling wine (Franciacorta, Asti, etc...). The text has a broad overview of sparkling wine production, then each section has a preface with information pertaining to said region. Within the regions, the text has individual producer entries.

While this isn't something that one would necessarily need for passing WSET or CMS exams, it is a handy reference for broadening knowledge of the producers of sparkling wines. Each entry also has a score indicating quality and potential. Champagne houses seem to have the edge, which is natural, but the authors have given some good scores to producers outside the classic region, though with a lower overall average. And while many folks may agree or disagree with the scores, it nonetheless makes for a good barometer for those navigating the thousands of producers in this book.

Also of note, Champagne producers are listed with the type of establishment they operate: RM, NM, and so on. This can help readers determine which producers grow their own grapes and which purchase grapes (though it is generally not a quality indicator).

If you have someone who loves Champagne and gets really geeky about individual producers, then this is a great gift idea. It can be quite technical, but the information is heavily researched and well laid out. For those more interested in the drink but not the technical information, there are some books which discuss more of the history and have less technical information.

A Wonderful, Frustrating Read

On the one hand, the story is absolutely wonderful - evocative, compelling, and mesmerizing. The premise is great, although I have some questions about the long-range effects of that premise. The characters are well-developed, even the minor ones. The basic writing style is enjoyable. Following the adventures of Will, the main protagonist, has been an adventure for me as well coupled with significant lack of sleep as I am seemingly forced to keep finding out what happens next. Because of the excellence of the story, I will likely get the next book in the series.

On the other hand, the editing sucks. It is not a matter of typos. There are few of those. However, there is every manner of other types of editing errors. Many times it seems like the author dictated the book, but never read it to make sure the words came out right. So "clouds" is used instead of "crowds" or "exaggerating" instead of "exacerbating." It becomes almost a game to identify the correct word. Many sentences seem to have too few or too many words such that the sentences are indecipherable. Then there are the factual errors. Just one example - neither Gen. Grant nor Gen. Lee were at the battle of Gettysburg. The author seems compelled to contract any word structure with "had" or "could" so that it is sometimes hard to tell which is meant. Worst of all, for me, the author frequently writes as if he hasn't read his own work. There are constant errors of fact regarding things that have happened, which is frustrating and aggravating. There are annoying summaries of things that happened just chapters earlier. All of these editing errors cause the reader to stop her headlong progression to go, "What? Wait!" It is almost, almost enough to make me want to stop, but I still need to read the next chapter.

This book and this series could be one of the greats, if a final thorough edit had been done. As it is, the substantive editing errors hold this book (and all the others) back. It was a hard decision whether to give three or four stars. I chose four stars, because I want to recommend the series with the caveat that some teeth gnashing will occur.

Too bad the science is bogus

I have enjoyed this series to this point, but I don't think I will finish it.
When an author takes liberties with basic science in a science fiction story, especially when the error does not help the story, I get impatient.
The first error that caught my attention was the "below sea level" lake on an island southwest of England. Really. What causes it to drain?
In this book, our hero teleported into a cave that in a vacuum. Really?! Give me a break. And how does this help the story?
These types of errors detract from an otherwise pleasant time loop story with interesting characters and a decent love story.
I won't finish this series and I doubt I will read any more from this author. I'm sorry I wasted my time. Sorry Alex.

Will keeps his journey going in the 4th book "Birth of the Alliance". There are issues for Will but he overcomes them. He makes the Alliance to be what it should be helping people (humans) out, not like the Aliomenti which is self centered all about Me (Arthur). Will takes the Cavern and makes it a home for everyone of the Alliance. The Alliance grows. With Wills knowledge he invites things before their time which helps the Alliance. There are problems along the way but are things worked out for the good? What happens to Will.

To find out you must read the first three in the Aliomenti Saga. This is a must read book. Alex you are a great authur can't wait to read the rest of the saga and move on to other books you have written. Keep up the good work.

Fitting Title

With so many genres that offer fantastic novels, variety is so out there. As a avid reader I like to mix it up abit and historical romance is one of those. This is also my first time in reading this author so curious to see if she can hold my attention. Grace is not your average woman especially in that time, she is a midwife and healer. Some would often even call it witchery and nonsense but what they turned to in the form of medicine was torture mostly I think. In the place they are in she has earned a good following and respected for her skill. Her best friend is proof that she knows her stuff. The one who she does butt heads with and likes to rile though is Jonathan who works for her friend's husband. He also has a very sick son that he has come to the end of his choices that pride will be swallowed with him asking her to see him. They are also in the same mind about marriage-not for them, especially with their situations. That is the grand thing about love that it seems to like to bring two together that say nope and turn it around. In this you see how their relationship will take a turn and develop into something that neither saw coming or thought would happen. The spunk and personality of both will shine forth being revealed as you travel along with them. Thanks though to the time and place discretion is going to be needed or lives will be blackened. The banter they have with each other is delightful and at times so humorous too. The eloquence of courtship as much as they can have in their circumstances will fit right to them. The deception though will also cause others to think different especially where Jonathan is concerned and the direction of his future will be meddled in because of lies to cover up reality.The prejudice of the upper class will shine forth making you want to smack someone. As time goes on harder and harder will feelings be to hide and with a event that happens all will come to light in a unexpected way. So do love the line towards the end that includes the title that fits this novel to the tee on the very last page.

Fall in love again!

The Hearts of Honour series continues with a seductive tale of enemies turned into lovers.

Grace, the Hartley herbalist and midwife, and Jonathan, the Blackthorn estate manager, got off to a more than rough start in the first book of the series, Passion & Propriety. Their best friends, Hannah and William, fell in love in the face of adversity. At first, their love hit a nerve with both Grace and Jonathan, but they did find a way to accept it. In Grace's case, she even envied her best friend.

In Duty & Desire, Jonathan is at his wits end, watching his son, Peter, deteriorate day by day. When the last "specialist" drains his accounts, he allows Grace to examine the boy. Over the course of Peter's treatment, Jonathan comes to respect and admire Grace in a way he never thought possible. Grace also sees Jonathan in a new light, as a man who deeply loves his son and is unwaveringly loyal to those he cares for most.

DeSallier gives us an unforgettable romance in impossible circumstances. The intricacy of the plot had me devouring the novel in only a day. I loved how I was pulled into the story and the town of Hartley like I was one of the members of their community. The pacing gave a realistic feel to the story, making me smile and cry right along with the characters.

Always the queen of twists and turns, DeSallier shocked and amazed me with a climax I never saw coming, but completely fell in love with. I cannot wait to devour another of Elise DeSaller's novels as soon as she releases it.

LOVED this Romance!!!

I was so excited to get Grace's story after reading the first book in the series, Passion and Propriety. Grace was a wonderful supporting character there and she's a fabulous main character here. She's strong and it irks her to be just a wee bit jealous of the relationship Hannah and William had in that book. As a bastard daughter and a woman who works for her living with her midwifery skills, she doesn't think she's going to be able find a husband of her own.

Jonathan has been looking for a cure for his young son's illness for years. Unfortunately, the doctors of the time have nearly killed the little guy. He's at his wit's end when he agrees to let Grace examine young Peter. They work together to bring him back to health. And instead of sniping at each other (as they have been for ages) they find an attraction between them that gives us, the reader, a very satisfying case of UST (unresolved sexual tension). Even as Grace tells Jonathan that he needs a more "gently bred" young woman as his wife, the two enter into a secret relationship...and goodness me...is it hot! But it's not "just" sex...no, this is love and it's fabulous.

A great cast of supporting characters add a lovely depth to the story. And some laughs, too. I did love young Peter!

Loved this book, and now I want more from this author. I highly recommend this book to people who want that Regency experience with a side of steam...and love.

HELP with the SUTTON PLACE story [SPOILER]....>

I have Cheever's ''short stories'' book after seeing the film again after decades, just to read Swimmer, and read 2 more to see if he always leaves people dangling... and IN '''Sutton Place story''', it also baffled me, if anyone's read that. I tried to mark the stories in table of contents that revolved around manhattan since that's my life and what i relate to, but ""SPOILER ALERT""... that one I do not know who ""Martha""is who gave her the bread, nor when there was even bread, but I think the name Martha is more the point, not the bread. Can anyone explain? I read a 3rd '''the sorrows of gin''', i think the next one after sutton place, only because it was very short, but it was not open ended, luckily, having hoped all of his works were not like that, which I do find too frustrating... I love things that make us ''THINK'' but not open ended. Again.....Could anyone explain the sutton place one, and MARTHA? Also there were so MANY unneccessary things in that sutton story, it was a total waste of reading, then hit with that Martha thing as the last words, unless I missed something, and the name marth WAS mentioned before through that story, if so couldin't have been more than once, or i'd have remembered it. So annoying and no time to trace back for the name. HELP. OH, and by the way... CHEEVER is IN his film ''The Swimmer'' at the very FIRST pool party, in case not everyone knows. He is in black pants and white shirt and tie shaking "Ned's" hand later in that same pool scene, with his wife Marge Champion coming out few minutes later, they are taking a plane that day. And "Ned" makes fun of his pouch tummy, that's Cheever. lol

I initially got the free sample of this book to see if I would like it and the first story was simply wonderful so I had to have the whole book. I really enjoyed the whole book, it is actually quite long and a good deal for the money to have so many classically American short stories. The only thing is that many of the subsequent stories are rather melancholy and I have had to read them only when in a good mood because they really got me down if I was not feeling really good before I read them. Sometimes I actually had to stop reading because they affected me so much. This book is quite powerful and though I really enjoyed that, I am not sure if I could or would want to read it again.

An Essential for Any Reader

It is most appropriate that the entire body of Cheever's short stories should be brought together in one place. I bought this on the strength of one of these stories, "The Swimmer," the film version of which has enthralled me for years but which I had, somehow, never gotten round to reading.

Thematically speaking, Cheever bears a striking resemblance to F Scott Fitzgerald in his focus on a specific socioeconomic group in a specific location: the middle-to-upper-middle class in New York City and its suburbs. A few of his stories take place, at least in part, in Italy, most particularly Rome, but even in these stories the people seem to be displaced New Yorkers.

Most of Cheever's people either have money or are at least not struggling financially in any real sense. They are usually successfully married, but it is striking how often "successfully married" does not mean "happily married."

The overwhelming theme of many of these stories appears to be simple boredom. A man has a charming and gracious wife whom he loves and who loves him, yet he has an affair with another woman simply because the opportunity arises. This happens in a good many of the stories in this collection. At the end of the day, we are reading about people who by all accounts should be happy with their lives, but for reasons even they themselves do not know, they are not. Or they are, but the monotony of daily life has blinded them to it.

Some of the stories in here are real knockouts: "The Swimmer," the tale that got me to buy this collection, tells the tale of a man on a sort of reverse Odyssey, suburban style, which ends abruptly, leaving the reader baffled as to what has happened to him. Yet this is perhaps the best story in the entire collection.

There are also a handful of stories that have a certain otherworldly quality to them. A couple of them have strong echoes of Kurt Vonnegut. Whether Cheever was influenced by Vonnegut or vice versa I do not know, but if he was, I'm afraid he was reaching; the kind of fantasy world that Vonnegut was so comfortable in is not really Cheever's territory.

Reading all these tales in one collection produces a certain feeling of monotony; a lot of them are merely variations on the same theme, and a few of them are basically the same story told using different names and places.

That being said, it is a territory that Cheever knew well; the stories are all worthy of your time, and a few of them are absolute stunners.

As a collection, it has some flaws (monotony being the most prominent of these), but this is still an essential collection for anyone who enjoys good short stories.

Enhance Your Favorite Foods and Drinks with Fresh Brew

Cookbooks are plentiful and every household has at least one stashed away in the kitchen drawers, usually pulled out only when someone in the family feels like being creative. General, comprehensive cookbooks are common, but cookbooks that focus on specific ingredients are often the most fun and a good example is Cooking with Coffee, a guidebook to making beverages and foods enhanced with your favorite roasted brew.

I don’t normally cook, but I do like coffee and when I heard about this book, it did pique my interest. The main reason is because, well, I hadn’t heard of a cookbook that focused on coffee as an ingredient. It shouldn’t be surprising that someone thought of this, given the vast number of flavored coffees available. But this is the first one I had ever seen so I took advantaged and accepted an offer to read and review the book.

Cooking with Coffee is a nicely illustrated and instructive guide. Almost every recipe includes a full color photograph complete with an introduction to each recipe, a thorough list of ingredients, and easy to follow instructions. The majority of the recipes are simple, but there are some more complicated ones, too. I’m not much of a cook and I love beverages, so the first section to which I turned was the one for drinks and smoothies. Beverages don’t require much culinary skill and are usually easy to make, so this section seemed like the best one for me. And I did find some really good recipes here, like peanut butter mocha smoothies and homemade Irish cream.

Looking at the recipes as a whole, you will find that some call for freshly brewed coffee, others call for coffee grounds. It’s up to you to decide which flavor of coffee to use, and this is where the fun comes in. A recipe’s overall taste can change drastically just by switching to a different coffee and when you consider the large number of different flavors and styles of coffee on the market, there is virtually no limit to the number of recipes in this book because most any flavor can be substituted. My peanut butter mocha smoothie, for example, tastes very different when prepared with French roast coffee than it does when prepared using vanilla coffee and this is what keeps a recipe book like this interesting.

One thing about this book everyone should know is that it limits itself to sweets, drinks, sauces, and other basics. When I think of how complex and crafted coffee has become, I can’t help but wonder if the author has another book in store, one that focuses on gourmet foods, meat dishes, full meals, etc. Lots of food dishes could be compatible with coffee as an ingredient and it will be interesting to see if the author of this book continues down the java recipe road.

Coffee has evolved into an interesting beverage and Cooking with Coffee is a nice way to enjoy your favorite brew in ways you may have never imagined. It’s a good gift for the coffee fiend and it’s a great way to further enjoy the many great taste sensations imparted by adding a good cup of coffee to dessert foods and drinks.

Coffee and Cooking? Really 2 favorite things!!!

I received my book today and am SO excited to start making some of these recipes. And although the Salted Toffee Ricotta Toast is on the menu tomorrow morning, I couldn't resist making a very quick Coffee Caramel sauce to put on my scoop of ice cream tonight. A-MAZ-ING! The coffee added a depth to my lovely caramel craving!

I Don't Drink Coffee, But...

I am not a regular coffee drinker. I do enjoy the flavor of coffee, though... I simply prefer drinking tea. That said, I love the recipes in this book! Each one I have made has been delicious. I had no idea that coffee could add such a wonderful depth of flavor and complexity to food. To be able to elevate the taste of standard fare with a relatively inexpensive household staple -- coffee -- is an idea whose time has come. So glad the author decided to devote an entire book to cooking with this ingredient. I highly recommend it!
