Helpful aid to German language learning

I've been a student of many languages. Over the course of high school and college, I formally studied Latin, Greek, Russian, Italian, Arabic, and German. But you won't master a language just by sitting in a classroom, so I also been a bit of an autodidact and done a lot of self-study to supplement my formal studies. I've come to find that verb conjugation books are some of the most helpful tools when it comes to building your foreign language skills. And thus far I've found these Big (Color) Book of (Language) Verbs to be among the best when it comes to verb conjugation books. (Besides the Big Yellow Book of German Verbs I also own the Big Silver Book of Russian Verbs.) The book provides some basic grammar information to explain the different conjugated forms along with some exercises to practice, but of course the main attraction is the collection of 555 fully conjugated verbs. The book not only provides full conjugations for all of these verbs, it also provides helpful usage examples with sample sentences and related verbs. An index in the back makes the book serve as a sort of German-English verb dictionary too. Even if the verb you're looking for isn't one of the 555, you can still look it up and find a verb that conjugates the same way. So if you're studying German, either as part of a class or just self-study, I would recommend this book as a worthwhile aid. It can help you learn how to correctly conjugate all those crazy German verbs and thus be able to construct meaningful German sentences.

A fabulous resource for intermediate level German Students

Best resource available for verb conjugation in German. Each page contains conjugations for a single verb along with many examples of the verb in usage.

Beginners can benefit from this resource as well, once they learn the infinitive form of a verb.

The cross reference in the back, covers thousands of additional verbs and points you to one of the 555 that complies to the same cunjugation rules.

Comprehensive and useful

For those with a basic background in German, this book is invaluable. It starts off with a chapter of concise and useful information about German verb conjugation and usage in general, followed up with 555 of the most-commonly used ones. For the vast majority of people learning German, this book will contain more than enough data, presented in a way that is easy to understand. Highly recommended.

His software book was translated into Russian, and his Executive Qualities was translated into Spanish. Joe Fox grew up in Brooklyn N.Y., graduated from St. John’s University in Queens, N.Y. with a degree in Mathematics, and joined IBM in 1956. Twenty years later, still in IBM, he had his book Executive Qualities published by Addison Wesley in 1976. IBM, not mentioned nor identified in the book, did not see it before publication. IBM was not identified as the venue for the management ideas and concepts. After 9 printings, the publisher discontinued the book, but it still sells in book form on the Amazon used book service. Mr. Fox frequently presented the traits, talents, trials and tribulations detailed in his Executive Qualities book several times at IBM’s Sands Point executive month-long training, and at CIA management meetings in Langley, Virginia. Mr. Fox chaired several committees for DOD during his career. This version of his book Executive Qualities is the original text with a few pages deleted. The book was preceded by his collection of quotes, and over 400 of them are in the book.

The most thoughtful professional development book I know of

I read this book for the first time in the late 1970's. Over the years I used it exentsively with managers and others who worked for me in a major multi-national corporation. It is the best resource that I know of for people to objectively access their qualities and abilities and to understand how these are essential for both business and personal growth. I have given away more than 100 copies over the years. I now use it as a resource for my clients in my management consulting practice. I regret that this fine book is no longer in print.

The value of understanding the executive

I read this book several years ago, lent it to a friend, and never got it back. I have been searching for years to find another copy. This text provides powerful insights into the mind of good executives. Why they are executives, what you will need to become one (if that is your ambition) and how to deal effectively with executives. The importance of emotional maturity, the difference between being bold (good) and being aggressive (not so good), the value of knowledge, and why personality, character, and integrity are so important to being an effective executive are all illustrated extremely well. This is by far the best book on management I have ever read and it has had a more lasting impact on my career than any other I have ever read. It is very unfortunate it is no longer in print. If you have a copy or are able to acquire one, consider yourself very fortunate. This book is based on the practical approach, the way people really interact, and therefore it has tremendous value. It is not a theoretical work

nice and concise

As a statistics graduate student in the mid 1970s I took the three quarter graduate course sequence in mathematical statistics from Brad Efron and Charles Stein at Stanford. Efron taught the first two quarters and Stein the third. Our "official" texts for the course were Rao's "Linear Statistical Inference" and Ferguson's decision theoretic text. The books were useful reference sources but we also relied heavily on the instructors notes and Lehmann's "Testing Statistical Hypotheses".
However when I was preparing for my qualifying exam, I found this monograph by Silvey to be very helpful. It is concise and thus is great as a refresher for the important fundamental concepts that are all covered very well. I find it to be a great reference source when I need to refresh my memory on important points.

The book is only 190 pages but covers all the basics of mathematical statistics. Chapter 1 introduces the concepts of hypothesis testing and decision theory. Chapter 2 develops the theory of minimum variance unbiased estimation, covering concepts of sufficiency, completeness, efficiency, Fisher information, the Cramer-Rao inequality and its generalization and the Rao-Blackwell theorem. Chapter 3 covers the method of least squares and presents the Gauss-Markov theorem, weighted least squares and theoretical properties under assumptions of normally distributed errors. Chapter 4 presents maximum likelihood and its large sample properties. Chapter 5 covers confidence sets and 6 hypothesis testing. To emphasize the conciseness, Chapter 5 is 7 pages and Chapter 6 only 14 pages (including exercises). Sequential tests are covered in Chapter 8, non-parametric methods in Chapter 9, the Bayesian approach in Chapter 10 and basic decision theory in Chapter 11.

It is a shame that this book is out of print. An Amazon reader who is a statistics graduate student asked me for help understanding the Neyman-Pearson theory. Since he is having difficulty with his class text he was looking for a better source. Lehmann's book gives the rigorous mathematical proofs but I recommended Silvey as perhaps a better source for getting some insight. He may try to get a copy through Amazon. If so I hope that Amazon can find one for him!

Concise and Insightful

This is an excellent text on statistics for serious, mathematically-minded readers. It covers every basic point in statistics in a concise and somewhat abstract manner without heavy use of measure theory. Personally, I am not very fond of abstractness, and this book does a good job of motivating the concepts. Therefore, the application-oriented reader will, hopefully, maintain his interest despite the reading being somewhat dense. It's a good reference and DEFINITELY not a bedtime read--unless, of course, you want to dream about those sexy math symbols.
