Great Book!

My orginal DR guide was lost in a basement flood, I was looking for a replacement for my desk libary at work. There was some math (statistics)on availablity / reliablity that was a little hard to follow - my college math is quite rusty, but it was nicly summerized in a graph format, so I could follow it. The network and data center sections are very well done.

Conceptually very good, Methodology too

This is my first book about this matter. Although I have some experience implementing solution with HA/DR requirements, this book was very clarifier. Topics are conceptually clear and also this proposes a good methodology to face HA/DR requirements.

You will get some technical details about components that allow implement HA/DR, however it is not in deep. Don't think you will get a comercial product review. This is not the target.

It is a very good book.

Marked by pitched clashes between German Tiger tanks and Soviet T-34s, the engagement began well enough for the Germans, but the Soviets delayed them long enough to bring their reserves forward, counterattack, and force Hitler to call off the attack. Hundreds of thousands lay dead or wounded on both sides, but the Soviets won the battle and seized the initiative for the rest of the war.

Proficient Tactical Overview of the Offensive

I gave this book four stars for I'm very interested in the topic and enjoyed the ground covered by the author but I'll concede the rating may be a little generous for some readers.
If you are looking for a "short version" of the offensive or you find reading the full length books by Mark Healy's "Zitadelle" or David Glantz's "The Battle of Kursk" too intimidating then Mr Dunn's book is a very good choice. The book is written for the tactical or operational aspects of the battle; there will be no personal experiences included. If you have read any of Mr Dunn's other books you will know that even though there are only 200 pages devoted to the battle, this is a relatively serious review of the battle. I say relative because the author highlights certain aspects of the battle and while those areas covered provide good information, the book is not comprehensive. However, in Chapters four and five, the Order of Battle is the equal of the other two books mentioned. This is the chapter that contains the only map in the book. It shows the starting deployments for both sides. It clearly shows the superior forces the Russians had in defending the salient but its too bad the author didn't provide a series of maps to reflect German progress before the Operation was canceled.

Besides the deployment coverage, the author did a good job of describing the defense lines the Soviets had built as well as informing the reader where the current German advance was in regards to which defense zone was being assaulted. Other features that were liked include: The author frequently stressed the difference between counting completely destroyed panzers from ones that could be recovered and repaired. The Germans had an efficient system of recovering damaged vehicles from the battlefield and many of those panzers the Soviets claimed were destroyed were actually repaired and back on the field in days. A descriptive timetable of when and where Soviet reinforcements entered the battle was also helpful. It must have looked to the Germans that they were fighting an enemy of inexhaustable supplies of men and tanks. This battle also shows the Soviets had improved their tactical planning and execution as well as their logistics. Another interesting point discussed is that Manstein and Hoth believed the key to victory was a quick rolling up of the front defenses before the Soviets could regroup and reinforce. While this is true to a small degree, it was not entirely true for the Soviets were prepared much better than the Germans imagined but if the Germans believed it why didn't Hitler allow the 24th PzC with 17th PzD and Wiking to enter the fray on day two ( not on day nine as Manstein intended) when they were already behind schedule. One key issue regarding the impact of no reserves was Kempf's Group was always behind the 2nd SS PzC in their drive north which forced Tokenkopf to devote much of their resources to protecting the east flank instead of fully assisting Das Reich and LAH in driving forward. It would be interesting to play "What if" scenarios if the German weakened 24th PzC was brought up early in the operation.

A brief chapter outline follows:
The Strategic Position, April 1943: The author explains Operation Uranus and the Kharkov counteroffensive by Manstein in how the salient was formed. He also covers AGA's withdrawal from the Caucasus as well as the Rzhev offensive. The author has accumulated a wealth of information over his lifetime and includes many statistics that will help you get an understanding of casualties, number of tanks, the disposition of units and more. Its quite impressive.
Rebuilding the Red Army: In addition to mobilization of troops, the most pertinent area discussed is the reorganization and enhancement of tank brigades and tank destroyer brigades
The German Rebuild: After losing 6th Army, Germany did everything possible to put 800,000 men into uniform and to improve their weapon production. Women were put to work as well drafting men from other countries or to work the assembly line.
The German Order of Battle: A detail discussion of which units and exact deployment on the Kursk salient.
The Soviet Order of Battle: Through intelligence sources the Soviets knew that the coming offensive would be led by panzers and in this chapter the deployment of Soviet assets is discussed.
The Soviet Defense System: is an extension of the previous chapter, describing in greater detail the extraordinary efforts made to counteract the armored offensive.
Breaking through in the South: The battle begins and describes how the first defensive belt is penetrated in the south. Three quarters of the battle action pertains to the southern boundary where most of the panzer corps were deployed.

This completes the first phase; the introduction and setup for the coming battle. It takes up half of the book and it was very informative and interesting. It explains why Hitler chose to attack the salient and why he thought it could be captured. It explains Hitler's concern when the Allies attacked North Africa. It explains the restoration of forces and the preparations made on both sides. It explains why Hitler moved forces from Western Europe to take part in Citadel. A general observation of the tank battles near Prokhorovka and much more was presented. The rest of the book covers the offensive to July 15th.

Cracking the Second Defense Line: Breaking through the second line on their way to Oboyan and Prokorovka.
Fighting for the Third Defense Line: This involves the 2nd SS PzC's tank battle at Prokorovka.
Stalemate in the South: Against Manstein's wishes, Hitler calls off the offensive.
The North Shoulder: This is an overview of Model's offensive on the northern salient.
Conclusion: Discusses how this was Germany's last offensive and that the initiative was now with the Soviets. It also discusses how Manstein wanted to use the 2 panzer divisions in reserve to close and liquidate the pocket of the two Soviet armies that were between the 2nd SS PzC and 3rd PzC near the Donets River.

A Notes section, a few photos and a helpful Index complete the book.

This book is dry and contains a few typos but if you're a Kursk buff and interested in the tactical aspect of war, you will enjoy and learn from it. Its also a book in a series by Mr Dunn that not only describes a campaign but also includes the Soviet's attempts in improving their Armed Forces and their battle technique. Though its not the overall equal of "The Battle for Kursk" or "Zitadelle", it has tactical coverage the others don't have and would make a good supplement for those who want to know all their is about the campaign. Mr Dunn has studied the war on the Eastern Front for decades and many of us could probably learn from his dedication. Its highly recommended for the operationally minded.

Insufficient graphics

The author gives an extremely detailed account of the preparation, planning, and final execution of this monumental battle. His work would have been much more useful if he had included maps and graphics to a greater extent. The sheer volume of information would be better served with use of visual aids due to the geographic nature of the material.

Prokorovka or Bust

For only 192 pages, Walter Dunn's "Kursk: Hitler's Gamble, 1943" is a exhausting, dense work. The author puts the armies that fought at Kursk under the microscope in an accurate and precisely detailed examination of the greatest tank battle in history. The Battle of Kursk took place in the wide open steppes of Russia in the summer of 1943. By then the war was four years old, Russia's war industries were reaching full output, and the front lines were log jammed into an ugly bulge near the railroad town of Kursk.

Despite Dunn's caution against trusting German and Russian historians who misstated the scale of the battle for modern political reasons, one cannot avoid tallying up the loses. On the very first day of a struggle that was to last fifteen days, some 90 German tanks were out of action. Add to this the losses in armor suffered by the Russians, multiply them over the course of the battle, not to mention the number of killed and wounded on all sides that easily exceeded a quarter of a million, according to most sources.

The mind staggers in trying to comprehend this cold fact. Here is the ultimate message of "Kursk." If one reduces the story to mere statistics, as Dunn has done, you will discover the truth about the battle. If there is any fault in this book, it is an understandable one. In 192 pages of narrative, the author admirably analyzes the German and Russian sides of the battle, but the voices of the soldiers on the battlefield are missing.

About the Author

Rael Isacowitz is a world-renowned practitioner and teacher of Pilates. He has over 30 years of Pilates achievement and is a prominent lecturer and teacher at symposiums, universities, and studios around the globe.

Rael earned his bachelor of education degree from the Wingate Institute, Israel, and holds a master of arts degree in dance from the University of Surrey, England. During his career he has worked with numerous Olympians and many professional athletes and dancers.

Rael’s early Pilates teachers included Alan Herdman and thereafter several of the first-generation Pilates teachers (known as the Elders). To Kathy Grant, Ron Fletcher, Romana Kryzanowska, Eve Gentry, and Lolita San Miguel, Rael owes the inspiration and friendship that have guided his career.

Rael has mastered all levels of the Pilates repertoire and is noted for his unique athleticism and passion for teaching as well as his synthesis of body, mind, and spirit. In 1989, he founded Body Arts and Science International (BASI Pilates), which has developed into one of the foremost Pilates education organizations in the world. At present, BASI Pilates is represented in 20 countries.

Rael has authored the definitive book on Pilates (Pilates, Human Kinetics), published a series of training manuals on all the Pilates apparatus, produced DVDs, designed the revolutionary Avalon equipment, and created Pilates Interactive, the groundbreaking Pilates software. He is a regular contributor to several industry publications. Creativity and energy suffuse his work. For Rael, teaching Pilates is the ultimate gift. Isacowitz resides in Hood River, Oregon.

Karen Clippinger is a professor at California State University at Long Beach, where she teaches functional anatomy for dance, body placement, Pilates, and other dance science courses. She is also on the faculty for Body Arts and Science International (BASI Pilates), where she teaches Pilates certification programs. Furthermore, she teaches continuing education courses for BASI Pilates and other prominent organizations.

Ms. Clippinger holds a master’s degree in exercise science. Her lifelong passion is to make anatomical and biomechanical principles accessible so that people can better understand their bodies, improve technique, and prevent injuries. Her textbook, Dance Anatomy and Kinesiology, exemplifies this mission; reviewers have lauded the book for its combination of scientific comprehensiveness and practical wisdom.

Before joining academia, Clippinger worked as a clinical kinesiologist for 22 years at Loma Linda University Medical Center and several sports medicine clinics in Seattle. She has worked with hundreds of professional dancers and elite athletes and consulted for the U.S. Weightlifting Federation, U.S. race walking team, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. During that time she was drawn to Pilates because of its tremendous versatility and profound benefits for people of varying abilities and aspirations.

Clippinger is a renowned presenter in Pilates, dance, anatomy, and biomechanics. She has given more than 375 presentations throughout the United States and in Australia, Canada, England, Japan, New Zealand, and South Africa. Great Book for Person Who Wants To Learn the Whys and Wherefores of Pilates

I LOVE this book. It is a great book for someone who likes to know the nitty gritty of every little bit of what they are doing and why. When I took Pilates lessons my instructor became a little annoyed by my constant questioning about which muscles are we working, how does this affect this set of muscles, what can I do to improve this, and how can I modify this is I have a certain limitation. I think she felt that I was slowing down my learning but for me it was because I wanted to understand so I could do it just right. (or maybe it reminded her of a 3 year old asking questions for which she had no answers). Many people (especially those who are not learning to do Pilates for fun) may find this book filled with too many anatomical details but I think that they would still like it because it gives lots of info (what they refers to as cues) so that you can learn to do it right (not everyone lives near a Pilates studio or can afford classes). If you prefer to learn by watching then this may not be the book for you but I think that you could still benefit from information on technique and modifications. If you feel overwhelmed by scientific names or don't really care about the mechanics of the exercise, stick with a class or CD or Amazon prime video. Also I don't recommend any books on Kindle except for little mini guides and fiction or poetry. As Kindle works now it is not the best format for reference books or complex cookbooks or exercise - anything where the material references back to another part of the book - like this one.

Want to heal your body? Buy and use this book.

My work is either sit in front of the computer or go to meetings. As a result, my body is always in pain when I get home. Sometimes, my back hurted so much during the flight I had to stand at the back of the airplane so I can take the pressure off my back. I have seen many chiropractors and physical therapists. My last PT was a ballerina and she told me to try pilates to strengthen my body and to work on different parts of my body so I can be more flexible. I have been following numerous exercies in the book and the exercies have improved my back pain tremendously. Obviously, it also helped to lose some weight.

I wish the author would create video so it would be easier for people to follow the instructions. Neverthelss, it is a great book and I wish I had known about it 10 years ago.

In my opinion, pretty good!

I gave this book four stars because it explained pilates to me with anatomical illustration, which is what a visual person like myself needs. I felt that it provided a solid foundation for me to understand the processes that are going on within and what the intended results are to be. This was my first book on the subject and thus I have nothing to compare it to, but in my opinion, it was pretty good and I'm glad that I purchased it.

About the Author

Jos Stam is a senior research scientist with Autodesk. He was born in the Netherlands and educated in Geneva, Switzerland, where he received dual bachelor degrees in computer science and pure mathematics. In 1989 he moved to Toronto, where he completed his master’s and PhD in computer science. His research spans several areas of computer graphics: natural phenomena, physics-based simulation, rendering, and surface modeling, especially subdivision surfaces. He has published papers in all of these areas in journals and at conferences. In 2005 he received the SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Achievement Award, one of the most prestigious awards in computer graphics. He also won two Technical Achievement Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science and has been featured in Wired magazine.

Great book, wrong publisher.

This is a great book. Computational fluid dynamics is not easy and there are very few, if any, math or physics books that cover the material with real implementation in mind - the few I've come across are terribly boring. This is a different kind of book and is a nice supplement to the author's well-known paper on implementing fluid solvers.

The missing star is for the choice of publisher and quality of the illustrations..... CRC Press is hardly coding hacker mainstream and is very expensive. Some of the illustrations/images are of very poor quality, as are some of the code listings.

Still, a very good guide to getting started with fluid animation.

Luciano Alves

Luciano Alves is Brazilian. He lives in the city of Porto Alegre in southern Brazil. He has been a Zabbix evangelist since 2007. Since 1994, he has been working to support the ICT infrastructure using his expertise in targeting and monitoring platforms. Luciano has had Zabbix professional certifications since 2008, and in 2012, he became one of the first official instructors outside of Zabbix SIA. Not only performance help also helpfull as general overview

What I like most about this book is that it is short and quickly to read. But it is full of helpfull informations regarding Zabbix perfomance AND the Zabbix structure in total. So no bla bla around the information.
The booked helped me as an "experienced starter" with Zabbix to get a better picture what is in which relation to all the other components of the system.
So it is worth not only if you have performance issues but also to get a good background on all the Zabbix components.
The tips and things to considere are all clear and can be directly used even the author says that the exact tuning values depends on your structure. But you can copy them to your site and from the book you learn how to tweak them for you and how to monitor them. As my team mate is the Zabbix pro I trusted him a lot but after reading this book I found a lot of things we could have done better from the start. And chaning them now helped us to avoid some pitfalls.
So even if the content seems to be for the Zabbix pros it will help us beginners also very good.

Must have for every Zabbix Administrator, approaches every aspect with good detail

It covers all must know topics and components:
- Database
- Zabbix server
- Zabbix proxy
- Items and triggers
- Storage
- Webserver
- Php
- Operating system

It describes in higher details how every component interact with each other, how to estimate the size of your infrastructure, hardware for each piece, predict database and organic growth. How to construct and customize templates, why you should do it, how to monitor Zabbix health, and so on.

If you already manage a big environment, you can get new ideas, consolidate others and find new ways to improve.
If you don't, it will be of great help to get to know some best practices, learn to avoid some problems and/or how to deal with some that you still hit.

I almost took one star off of it because of when the book approaches the DBSyncer parameter, it's not mentioned how it does behave in great detail. What the book misses, is that DBSyncer does so by locking HistoryCache by itemid, calculates trends. Sometimes it does generate a bottleneck and does not perform well enough. This is hard to monitor, but still very important. It's better described on https://support.zabbix.com/browse/ZBX-9201.

Still a great book, though. With it, got few new insights, adopted the use of php accelerators and validated many other aspects of current implementation.

An must read for every Zabbix administrator/user

This is an very good book about tuning your Zabbix environment. Most books about Zabbix will explain how you monitor environment with items, triggers and web scenarios and how you should do this. But this book will only talk about these things when it is related about performance. Why for example is ".last()" better for performance instead of using "avg()"?. Also your environment/hardware where Zabbix is installed is described in this book. The database is very important in your setup and a whole chapter on tuning is dedicated to this.

I personally liked the chapters "Chapter 3: Tuning the Zabbix Server" and "Chapter 10: Monitoring the Health of Zabbix". Chapter 3 is about the triggers I mentioned earlier and buffers and caches. I never found some clear information about these caches and buffers and what they do. Chapter 10 is about the health of Zabbix itself and basically describes the "Template App Zabbix Server" (And Proxy) templates in Zabbix what they mention/do.

The author mentioned why he only focused on performance tuning for MySQL, but it would be nice in next releases if there is an chapter about tuning the PostgreSQL database. I was lucky, but I know people who have PostgreSQL as database server who can skip an chapter in this book.

I really liked reading this book and is written very nice. I will definitely recommend this book to other Zabbix administrators/users.

Math Textbook

This book is easy to read, however, the lessons do not always explain the math adequately and not all the practice problem answers are in the back. It does have plenty of examples for each concept and builds nicely on each idea.

I was pleased with the speed at which they shipped my item. The only thing that I did not like was the book seemed to be very tacky and dirty on outside. It also smelled like a cigerette. I believe I can work past that. I would reccomend this place to others. Book overall was in real good shape.
