No Magic Bullet: A Social History of Venereal Disease in the United States Since 1880, by Allan M. Brandt

From Victorian anxieties about syphilis to the current hysteria over herpes and AIDS, the history of venereal disease in America forces us to examine social attitudes as well as purely medical concerns. In No Magic Bullet, Allan M. Brandt recounts the various medical, military, and public health responses that have arisen over the years--a broad spectrum that ranges from the incarceration of prostitutes during World War I to the establishment of required premarital blood tests.

Brandt demostrates that Americans' concerns about venereal disease have centered around a set of social and cultural values related to sexuality, gender, ethnicity, and class. At the heart of our efforts to combat these infections, he argues, has been the tendency to view venereal disease as both a punishment for sexual misconduct and an index of social decay. This tension between medical and moral approaches has significantly impeded efforts to develop "magic bullets"--drugs that would rid us of the disease--as well as effective policies for controlling the infections' spread.

A Great History of Morality and Medicine
By Jack H.
No Magic Bullet creates a very detailed, extremely well researched volume on the evolution of healthcare. The progression through the various phases of modern thought may seem entertaining or absurd in hindsight yet Brandt very carefully recreates the time period making the rise and fall of each idea seem appropriate, regardless of their absurdity.

If you are looking for an entertaining read, look elsewhere. No Magic Bullet is geared towards academics or professionals. It is not a difficult volume but it is not a whimsical read either. The level of detail and research put into this text indicate a profound passion and understanding of medicine in the proper historical context.

I'll agree with the first review, some of the information may seem dated, but if you're writing about history it makes little difference. If you're looking for cutting edge information on AIDS and the developments made in the past ten years; look elsewhere. But if you want a social progression spanning through some of medicine's interesting periods this is an excellent resource.

I highly recommend this volume for anyone that might be remotely interested in sociology, healthcare, or history.

Rodin's Lover: A Novel, by Heather Webb

A mesmerizing tale of art and passion in Belle Époque France

As a woman, aspiring sculptor Camille Claudel has plenty of critics, especially her ultra-traditional mother. But when Auguste Rodin makes Camille his apprentice—and his muse—their passion inspires groundbreaking works. Yet, Camille’s success is overshadowed by her lover’s rising star, and her obsessions cross the line into madness.

Rodin’s Lover brings to life the volatile love affair between one of the era’s greatest artists and a woman entwined in a tragic dilemma she cannot escape.

Gripping and beautifully written!
By happycapy
You don't have to love historical fiction to love this book. Nor do you have to appreciate sculpture, or care about the politics of public art. You don't even have to be able to find Paris on a map. No, all it takes to love this book is a willingness to lose yourself in a story about a woman whose motto, if she lived now, would've been "Go big or go home."

Camille Claudel (about whom I knew exactly nothing) is a heroine I won't soon forget. Consumed by her drive to create, and inflamed by her love for her tutor, Auguste Rodin, Camille achieves more than any woman sculptor of her time, and pays the price at every level. Passion, heartache, entanglements and betrayal--it's all here.

Webb frames the story beautifully, carrying us into nineteenth century Paris and through the studios, salons and homes of the working artists and their models, benefactors, rivals and families. Her writing is precise (but never arch), assured and utterly convincing. I could feel the clay in Claudel's hand, and the fire in her heart.

Fast-paced and filled with raw emotion, Rodin's Lover is an impressive achievement, and a reminder of the power of great stories about great lives, whenever they were lived.

Exceptionally researched
By Melinda
Webb’s illustration of the complicated and abundantly talented artist Camille Claudel focuses on her tumultuous and licentious affair with Auguste Rodin, a man penetrating her heart yet elusive for her to possess.

Exceptionally researched, Webb highlights the art world in all its glory and harshness. The politics, power and societal propriety seizing artists and their creativity creating a fissure of misunderstanding. A world full of sexism and misogyny as female artists struggle to penetrate a male dominated world, an improper vocation fitting a woman.

Webb provides snippets of Claudel, more could have been offered besides her love of Rodin and their forbidden dalliance. Rodin comes across as weak, a man hopelessly in love with his artistic equal but bound by obligation and duty preventing a full fledged commitment with Claudel.

Despite their runaway attraction, the narrative fails to convey their deep rooted connection, it feels flat, lack of spark. Their mutual appetite for sculpting is also tempered. Two obsessive creatures in both art and love are not expressed as they could be in the narrative, rather a quiet storm leaving the reader anticipating and wanting more declared.

I was hoping Claudel’s slow descent into ‘madness’ was examined more. What drove her to ‘madness’ or was she a victim shut away for convenience sake of her ‘family’ as a maverick, an intelligent independent woman craving more or was art the culprit – much delving left wide open in this area.

An entertaining read, it’s a romance narrative rather than an in depth probe into the woman Camille Claudel. A woman worthy of notice and artistic praise as her life is often questioned in its shroud of mystery and unanswered questions. I was expecting Webb to take a different avenue with Claudel, despite my frustration this is a worthwhile read, if anything the reader will want to discover more of Camille Claudel on their own of her life, art, and tragic circumstances.

Realistic, tender, passionate historical novel in Belle Époque Paris
By Unabridged Chick
Webb's second novel focuses on a less well known figure, French Belle Époque sculptor Camille Claudel, and this novel surpasses her first (which was pretty fabulous!).

Camille is a bit of a savant, a self-taught sculptor with immense talent and a matching ego. Driven to pursue her art, she receives tutoring in Paris from one of France's preeminent sculptors, but her family is split in their support of her passion. Camille's father supports her while her mother rages against the unorthodox behavior of her daughter. While her mother tries to arrange a marriage, Camille is instead drawn to her newest tutor, the much lauded Auguste Rodin.

Lest you fear this is just another hist fic focusing on a lady with a famous lover, let me reassure you this is a far more complicated, rich, and eventful story. Camille is a hard heroine to love: prickly, confident to the point of obnoxious, and single-minded. In Webb's hands, she isn't softened nor does she turn flat the moment she falls into her lover's arms.

In fact, Webb's emotional sensitivity is something I've come to admire in her books as the dramatic events unfold without veering into melodrama. Webb doesn't shy from the hard, heartbreaking parts of Camille's life (I'm being vague about these parts for those unfamiliar with Camille's story, but there's nothing fluffy here!) and intense moments are touched with humor, bittersweet sadness, or irony, making it impossible for this reader to shake Camille's story.

I sometimes find books about artists tricky; it can be hard to render into compelling narrative endeavors that depend on other senses. But Webb managed to evoke the tactile experience of sculpting as well as describing the various sculptures and pieces of art without sounding like a text book. I "saw" the works even without having to google them (although google I did!). I have to give a particular shout out to Joshua DeLillo, who sketched three of Camille's works for use in this novel. They look like photographs, they're so finely rendered, and were a welcome addition to the story.

This is the second novel I read since having my baby (and the second for 2015), and it was a knockout -- well worth stealing time to read. It's a fabulous read for those who enjoy biographical novels; I'm particularly reminded of Melanie Benjamin, who I also think takes shocking, notorious lives and renders them realistically, tenderly, and with empathy. Enjoy this one with espresso or cocoa over a snowy weekend.

The Judaeo-Christian Myth, by Tina Rae Collins PhD

From fairy godmother to leg-breaking godfather, deities have risen and fallen in the hearts of men and women; and the Judaeo-Christian religion has developed into a powerful and dominant force in the world. It is the contention of the author of this book, however, that the Bible, while being revered and upheld as the one true word of the gods, is not in fact such, and that its theology and doctrines were not, as some seem to believe, dropped from the edge of a cloud upon which a divine being was riding. In this work Collins considers the origin and history of the basic tenets of Judaeo-Christianity and offers ample evidence to support her thesis: The Judaeo-Christian religion, like other faiths, is based on myths, which in turn were formed and evolved through the ancients' understanding of the earthly cycles of life and death as well as their devoted and attentive study of the sky. With nearly 1,000 footnotes and about 600 bibliographic references, this book is the result of deep and thorough research. So how is it different from other books on the same subject? First, it is written by a former Christian and seminary graduate who came to her conclusions by not only looking to ancient and modern religious and secular literature but to the biblical texts themselves. Second, she has brought together findings from multiple sources and condensed this knowledge into a somewhat brief discourse. If you're looking for a succinct, comprehensive, easy-to-follow resource regarding the origins of Christianity, The Judaeo-Christian Myth may be the book for you. Chapter titles: Gods and Goddesses; Jewish Henotheism/Polytheism; Dark Sayings of Old; Making New Sayings; Saviors, Christs, and Other Gods; Recycled Myths; Source of All Deity Myths; Gnostic Christ; Gnostic New Testament; Our Legacy. "Again, thanks for the book . . . it totally kept my attention. You chose a vast topic and you have succeeded in establishing your position. Your writing is smooth and fun and you generally avoid Christian jargon." ~ M.S., retired college professor

This book is a 10! We loved it!
By Robert Johnston
“When the student is ready, the teacher will appear” certainly applies to my encounter with this book!

The Judaeo-Christian Myth by Tina Rae Collins is an important challenge to the stories and assumptions of the Jewish scribes and early Christian authors whose writings ended up in the Christian Bible. Whether we agree or not with the premise, I commend Tina Rae Collins for her courage, her clear and concise writing, her fair use of sacred writings, and her extensive Bibliography.

Growing up in a fundamentalist Christian church we didn’t dare believe that the stories in our Bible were anything but gospel truth. So when I got into ministerial training, and we learned that ancient cultures had many stories of similar miracles that predated the Jewish prophets or the Christian interpreters by hundreds, even thousands of years . . . what would you say?

Were those older stories of almost identical miracles from other nations and other religions just copied into what became our Bible?

Precisely what, you ask, would young ministerial students say, with girlfriends and wives (may they never meet!) to support? What would the professors at our private church affiliated university say? Our response to such hard questions must certainly sound familiar . . . we just told each other, as the early Christian leaders did for two thousand years . . . that those older stories simply couldn’t be the “real truth,” but were nothing more than the crafty work of the devil, designed to trick unwary Christians. That answer was just what we wanted to hear! And it was good enough. For awhile.

Then years piled up, and some of those literal views began to unravel. I’ll be honest: a few of them just self-destructed on their own.

It’s just me and my college girlfriend (my wife for 40 years) at home now, our kids are gone, and we’re wondering, what do we tell them? Should we order copies of this important book, let them read it, and trust them to handle it without parental supervision?

Our world is tearing itself apart because three main religious groups, the religions of Abraham, took those stories literally.

I’m not trying to dodge the bullet here. As a child of my time, I’m willing to stand up and say, yes, we got some things wrong, but thankfully, we got a few things right.

So I’m not going to stand by and kick the can down the street for another generation. I’ll be bold here, and state a wish: if adherents to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam would read and understand the background of their own sacred texts, I think the world would be a safer place. And just maybe, those great redemptive stories will once again be appreciated for what they are, and the bloodshed will finally end.

This book is adult reading. Tough questions deserve honest answers. It was painful at times, yet liberating. Tina Rae Collins states in this book that she published it as a follow up to her dissertation, which I also purchased and read. A quick look at the Bibliography shows about 600 (six hundred) references, give or take. When we are ready, those resources await.

As Tina so gently reminds us . . . we’ve known these things for a long time.

Remember holding your kids on your shoulders, so they could see even further than you could? Remember asking them what they could see—when you couldn’t know for sure what they were seeing, but you knew, without question, they were telling you the truth?

This book is a 10, two thumbs up, five stars.

We loved it.

Highly Recommended
By John Marra
Though this type of material can be difficult and provocative for the uninitiated, Collins presents it in an extremely accessible and informative manner and in eminently readable prose which is free of the kind of vitriol which can sometimes manifest in this genre when sacred cows are being sacrificed on the altar of rational thought. I highly recommend this work to anyone interested in a sober examination of the origins of Judeo-Christian thought, practice, and tradition.
