Because of his passion for the Flash platform this was love at first sight. At the beginning of 2009, Paul decided he had to take more advantage of his technical skills as an internet entrepreneur. The Beginning Of Making Sense Of It All
By Chuck Brooks
Learning how to use 3D in Flash and Flex can be daunting. The open source Papervision3D offers the potential of accomplishing some great things, quickly and easily, but the learning curve is steep, involving a lot of trials and, usually, far more errors. As with many such things, Papervision3D is a marvel from a development community whose technical strengths are not matched by clear writing ability. Paul Tondeur and Jeff Winder have addressed this with their recently released Papervision3D Essentials, from Packt Publications. The first such work in lucid English, its 394 pages are organized in thirteen well organized chapters, starting with the basics and progressively broadening the foundations in related aspects, such as shading and modeling. Included here and there, almost causally, are productivity enhancing tips and tricks that many seasoned and experienced Flash/Flex many not know exist. Chapter One has to be particularly commended, which plainly, clearly and simply details the steps to setup the Papervision3D environments for Flash, Flash Builder and Flex Builder, and includes a test program that helps validate the setup. Each chapter has detailed example project code, again for both Flash and Flex Builder. The examples are written in Action Script 3; those still using AS2 may have some problems in getting up to speed. This is an excellent starter book for learning how to use Papervision3D, with the examples and discussions left to expand into more complex and interactive development by the reader. Highly recommended.Foundation ActionScript 3.0 Image Effects (Foundations)

A good book for beginners
By Biondi Fabio
I never used Papervision 3D (PV3D) before and I was looking for a resource to understand how it works in few time.

This book was the answer.
It provided me all the info I needed to develop my first basic 3d applications: it's quick to read ( i spent only 2 days to read whole the book), easy to understand and rich of samples, demo and exercises.
It doesn't require previous 3d knowledges and all the code is written for Flash CS* and Flex 3. You only needs to have ActionScript 3.0 fundamentals.

So, if you are a PV3D beginner and want to understand something more about this world I can suggest to buy it.

But....although it's a good PV3D overview, it's not enough.
Advanced topics are not covered so well and after few days I already needed more info to accomplish my tasks.
Naturally it depends from your targets and needs. If you would like to develop 3D photogalleries, 3d menu navigators or very simple 3d videogames you will get all the info you need and however it's a good starting point to understand the concepts and get more info from web.
If you already know PV3D probably it's not the right book for you.

Great to get you going past the quirks, not enough for experts.
By mugurm
Book was clear with clear examples. Great to get you going on papervision fast. I think much of the info should be available online but pv3d info seems too scattered, so save yourself some time and get this book.

If you're looking for really advanced answers they are probably not in here though.

Amazon.com Review
Pete Egoscue learned a lot about pain when, as a Marine officer, he was wounded in Vietnam. He segued from patient to physical therapist, and now runs a famous clinic in San Diego, where he claims he's helped 95 percent of his patients cure chronic pain--including Jack Nicklaus and Charles Barkley, whose athletic careers he helped prolong. At the heart of his program are stretches and motion exercises to restore proper function to muscles and joints. His methods are often surprising and counterintuitive. For example, for foot pain, he suggests a series of hip exercises. In fact, this is one of the most startling books you'll read about the human organism. Egoscue has strong opinions about how modern life is changing the way our bodies function, reducing the tasks we must perform and thus reducing the functional range of motion of our muscles and joints. Fortunately, he offers movement exercises to restore what nature meant us to have.

From Booklist
Modern life demands less and less movement and ranges of motion. According to these authors, "The less we know, the less we are capable of moving." Muscles that do not move lose strength and function, often leading to improper motion and chronic musculoskeletal pain. Following three introductory chapters outlining key biomedical concepts, this well-written manual addresses the body from the ground up, devoting a chapter each to feet; ankles; knees; hips; back; shoulders; elbows, wrists, and hands; and neck and head. Targeting each problem or problem area are specific exercise protocols, illustrated with photographs and clear instructions. Line drawings and boxed key concepts reinforce the text. Two concluding chapters present helpful exercises for various sports, a protocol for overall conditioning, and suggestions for putting more motion in one's life. If it is true, as the authors claim, that an estimated 35 million Americans suffer from chronic musculoskeletal pain, this easy-to-use guide will help the interested layperson get up off the sofa, get moving in new ways, and fix the cause of pain. It took 46 days, but it WORKED
By Zbunny
After 26 years of pain -- constant pain, debilitating pain -- I am truly pain free for the first time. I am nearly in tears typing this -- I honestly never thought this day would come but here it is! I had several major accidents (including being hit by a drunk driver who T-boned and flipped my car, plus a scary skiing accident and a bad rugby injury to name a few). I have been to dozens of doctors, surgeons, PTs, chiropractors, you name it, and none of them have ever had the impact on my health and pain that this book has. I have had surgeries (I'm nearly bionic now), been manipulated endlessly, had rounds and rounds of cortizone shots (sacroiliac joints, hips), epidurals, you name it. Nothing helped until a neighbor recommended this book.

It did not happen the first week, although within a few days I felt like my hips were looser in an odd way. It did not happen the second week, although my hip pain started to abate from a constant 6-8 to a more livable 4-6. I kept doing it. One day, my hip pain was so noticeably reduced that I thought: it's time to move on to my achilles, which had been literally hobbling me for months. (I started with my hips because, despite how bad my achilles were, my hip pain was more accute/intolerable.)

Fast forward to yesterday: 46 days after starting my e-cises and finally I can undeniably say that I am pain free! Today is day 47 and still pain free. A week more of my e-cises and this girl is moving on to Chapter 13 (the "for life" chapter). I have to say that I was skeptical, but I figured: What's the harm? It's not some MLM trapping me into a payment program for years; it's less than fifteen bucks. Best thirteen dollars and 99 cents I've ever spent!

I'm so happy! I'm trying not to think about how much it stinks that it took me this long to find this book: 26 YEARS of pain. But that's the past now.

Rather remarkable for my disabling Myofascial Pain Syndrome, CFS, and Sleep Disorders. If you've got Fibro, try this!
By OddModicum Rachel
Rather remarkable for severe, disabling Myofascial Pain, Chronic Fatigue, and Sleep Disorders. If you've got Fibromyalgia or related chronic pain conditions, try this method!

It just occurred to me as I was rating another title about chronic pain that I'd never reviewed 'Pain Free,' one of my very favorite titles on the subject. You haven't read enough about anatomical structure and how it relates to your pain until you've read this book! It's been a while since I read it, honestly, and am due for a re-read, but I will say that the 'Pain Free' book, and especially the two Pain Free DVDs are the one thing I tell any of my friends suffering with chronic pain that they cannot live without. Never before have a total of $30 spent on books and DVDs changed my life. Do I still have pain? You betcha. I'm not as diligent as I should be in applying Egoscue's methods, and I have a very severe disabling pain condition. But I will say that Pete Egoscue got me moving, again, and the noticeable drop in my pain levels has almost literally been a lifesaver. The difference between an 8 and a 5 on the pain scale might not seem substantive to a person not intimately familiar with chronic pain, but let me tell you... it is HUGE when you're living with daily pain that affects even your basic standards and activities of life. This is ESSENTIAL reading for any pain management patient or physician.... physical therapists, mental health practitioners dealing with chronic pain with their patients... all of them should read it, as well. This book, and the related dvds, are not to be missed. I've tried everything from yoga to tai chi to very very mild aquatic therapy. I simply don't tolerate it well, as my pain and fatigue levels are just too high, daily. I give it my all, but before long am left with limbs trembling and literally ready to fall down and curl up in a ball. Egoscue may look similar on paper to some other mild exercise regimes, but is DIFFERENT. I don't know how it's different, but rather than that utter exhaustion of limbs, and rising pain levels, I end up a bit energized and certainly in less pain after a go at the exercises. If you suffer with pain... please... try Pete Egoscue's method!!!! The book and the DVDs made such a difference for me, and they just might for you as well. Just trust me.... if you've still got partial function in your limbs, there's no such thing as 'too old' or 'too hurt' to try this method. Obviously, check with your doctor, first... heck, take him/her a copy of the book, because I've been astounded how many exemplary pain management docs have never heard of this one. It is so worthwhile. I've read a good 100 titles on chronic pain/disability/wellness over my nine year struggle with severe myofascial pain and fatigue... 'Pain Free' is the best of them, truly.

Here is my review on the Pain Free DVDs and a link to grab them at Amazon. IMO, you really need those to get the full benefit of Egoscue's method. http://www.amazon.com/review/R2YW3RTD23JUP1/ref=cm_aya_cmt?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B000PAU2ZS#wasThisHelpful

READ THE BOOK, GET TO A CLINIC
By Mita Murrell
Moving Again: My first four months at Egoscue
August 1, 2014
As an introduction, I am a 43 year old male, have been married for 17 years with four young children, am a pediatric doctor specializing in the care of hospitalized children, and a devout Christian involved in medical missions. I would say that my life has not been easy but has been meaningful and filled with many wonderful things. I have always prided myself on being able to overcome life’s obstacles. When I was nine years old I was diagnosed with cancer and subsequently had three and one-half years of treatment. This was of course a difficult time, but it gave me an appreciation for life and established in me a desire to make a difference. It also taught me at an early age how to cope with pain. I have some long-term minor health issues related to it but have been relatively healthy as an adult until I injured my back six years ago. This back pain has truly impacted my life and that of my family. In the past couple years I have felt like I am falling into the abyss. Egoscue is helping bring me out. It is out of gratitude to Elliott, my therapist, that I wanted to share my story.

I have “thrown my back out” seven times in the past six years. I have a problem that many people have, a herniated, ruptured disc at L4-5. I initially injured it in 1999, quickly recovered and did not really think anything of it. Then in 2006, at the age of 36, I had just returned from a month of medical work overseas, I was lifting awkwardly and felt a shock in my back. I then fell to the floor and was not able to get up. I spent the next 10 weeks recovering. Needless to say it was awful. After my recovery from that I seemed to return to a pretty normal level of functioning until eight months later when I did it again. That time I recovered faster (only missed three weeks of work) but did not seem to recover to my prior level of activity. Each time I have hurt it seems to follow this pattern. I am better at recovering from the episode but am not able to return to my previous level of functioning. In the last two years I have also developed chronic, daily pain. These episodes have caused me to miss 22 weeks of work.

Looking back over the past six years, my decline in functioning is frightening. Before I injured my back the first time, I was a pretty average 36 year old in my ability to do work around the house, travel, play sports, and do just about anything I wanted. Since that time I have seen my ability to move decline sharply. Four years ago I had some pain but was still able to travel to Cambodia and do medical work in villages for a month. Over the past three years I had been having pain on a daily basis and significantly limiting my activity. After work I would often lie down and not be able to help with the kids. I was having significant pain with driving so was not able to take them to their sports practices, go to dinner with my wife, or really do too much of anything. At work I do research and teach residents along with my clinical responsibility. I was worried that I was going to have to give those things up as I needed to lie down and rest anytime I was not taking care of patients. I was honestly afraid to get up in the morning for fear of pain and that I was going to hurt myself even more.

I have been to and through many therapies, therapists, and physicians over the past six years. I am a pediatric doctor so I have good access to all aspects of mainstream health care. I have consulted and been helped by some wonderful people. I am thankful that I have excellent back surgeons who have told me to stay away from surgery and a physical medicine doctor and physical therapist who believe in health through exercise. These people have helped me get over the initial pain of not being able to get out of bed and getting back to work, but I have not found anything that can take me the remainder of the way. I had not found any person or program that can help me get rid of the chronic pain and return to my prior level of functioning and an active lifestyle, not until I met Elliott at Egoscue.

My wife and I first came to Egoscue on April 7, 2014. We were skeptical at best that Egoscue could help me in any significant way. I had hurt my back pretty badly for the seventh time in the past six years on March 22nd and had been off work since. I felt hopeless about my back ever getting better. At the age of 43, I was investigating long term disability out of fear that I was not going to be able to work. On this day, I could barely get out of the house and down to the Egoscue office. I remember how painful it was just to sit there and talk. One of the first things Elliott did was acknowledge that I looked like I was in pain, tell me that he had been there himself, and ask me if I wanted to lie down while we talked. That was my first indication that this might be different. During what turned out to be a two and one-half hour visit, I started to have an inkling of hope that this could actually help me. By the end of that conversation I felt as if I had met someone that seemed to truly understand what I was going through and someone that felt confident that he could help me. And through his confidence, I actually started to believe that I could get better. He put me through a set of E-cises that day that I would not have thought I could complete, and unbelievably I actually felt better when I left the office.

I remember Elliott talking to my wife at that first visit, wanting to know how she felt and how it was impacting our family. He let both of us talk and tell our story. It was incredibly emotional for us being able to give voice to the pain that our entire family was experiencing as a result of my back. He just got it. He was able to convey to us that he got it, that he cared, and that he had a solution for us. He introduced us to Mita and Brittany and they were wonderful as well. When we left that day, we had a plan, in writing and online. We had specific instructions for the remainder of the day. He said he would call the next day and he did. He was available and helpful. He told us it would get better and it did.

It seems that at Egoscue you understand that relieving my pain is not just about putting my body in a position that makes the pain go away. The pain has been emotionally debilitating and physically oppressive. It affects the way I view myself and interact with those around me. Healing is of course about taking the pain away, but it is also about taking the fear away, and about empowerment and control. That is what I feel that Egoscue and Elliott are giving me. I know that Elliott will not want his name in here like this, but to me he is Egoscue. Our relationship, his encouragement, his getting it, has been critically important in these initial stages of my recovery. My wife, who is a far better judge of character than me, just loves him. She appreciates how much he cares about me. I feel like in him, we have someone to walk this journey with.

Probably the biggest change for me has been getting control over my fear. I used to not want to get out of bed in the morning for fear of the pain and fear that I was going to injure my back and not be able to work and take care of my family. Fear affected my mood, my ability to take care of my patients at work, my interaction with my wife and kids. Today I still have fear but it is minute compared to what it was. Instead of thinking about my back multiple times an hour, I now think about it off and on and often when I do I am just excited about how good it feels. I am trying to transition my fear back to being that rational thing that keeps me safe, motivated and humble, and away from the thing that it became that caused so much anxiety and paralysis. I am on the way.

So what is my life like four months into Egoscue? I am not in pain all the time. I can work a 14-hour day in the hospital and concentrate on taking care of my patients. I can drive my kids to sports and stay and watch them play. I can go out to dinner with my wife. I can get out of bed in the morning without stiffness, pain, and fear. When I walk I feel good, straight, and comfortable. I can sit evenly and upright. I can help put my two year old son to bed. I can do yard work. My wife and I are talking about overseas missions work again. Life is good. I still have a long way to go. And I know, as Elliott has reminded me, that I am going to tweak my back again at some point, but I will take that if I can have my life back.

I feel hopeful about my ability to return to and stay at a level of functioning that I want, hopeful that I am going to be able to work for many years to come, that I am going to be able to take care of my family, participate in my kids lives in a meaningful way, be a good husband, father, and son.

I feel like Egoscue, and Elliott in particular, have given me my life back. It is rare to meet a person that truly cares and that can and wants to help. I want to thank you, Egoscue and Elliott, for giving me my life back. I honestly did not think it would happen but it is. I look forward with anticipation to what is ahead.
Thank you Pain Free, Pete Egoscue, The Egoscue Method and my therapist, Elliott Williams

An outstanding new take on the classic dungeon crawl
By William M. Wilson
I sadly missed out on the ground floor for Dungeon World, but have been running a game from the PDFs for several weeks now. I'm thrilled to be getting a hard copy, finally!

Dungeon World is a rules-light, narrative RPG that's more or less a love letter to the classic oldschool dungeon crawls of the late 70's and early 80's. If you started playing D&D as a kid, it runs more or less exactly like how you imagined a fantasy game of exploration and adventure *should* run.

If you've run or played Dungeons & Dragons (of any edition) there will be a lot here that's familiar ... and a lot here that just seems weird or doesn't make sense. For example, the Dungeon Master never rolls any dice. And there's no system for initiative once combat starts. And all the rules are broken down into things called "Moves," whatever those are.

But on the other side of the coin, you have classic Paladins, Thieves, Clerics, Fighters, Wizards, and the rest, all with rules to make them act exactly like you hoped your characters always *would* act back when you learned to play D&D. Character creation is easy. The rules are mostly written on your sheet. Everything on the player side just plain makes sense. On the DM's side, once you start to understand how Dungeon World works and what your "Moves" are for, it runs like a dream. My prep time after the first session has been almost zero, which is both unsettling and liberating. But every single session has delivered the fun in spades.

The core of Dungeon World is the narrative flow. The story. There aren't rules for positioning, flanking, oversized weapons, or any of that. You're sitting at a table with your friends, collaborating and making a cohesive narrative with rules and dice. When a dragon breathes fire on you, sure it does damage. But it also *lights things on fire*. There's no rules for this; it acts more or less like how fire should act. If you attack a goblin's sword arm, it could very well drop its weapon or have to switch hands because you just hit it in the arm with a sharp weapon. It's all based on what the DM and the rest of the group think is appropriate or sensible. The game starts and ends with the narrative, not the rules.

Finally, if you need help with the game, there are several vibrant and helpful communities out there, including guides to help those of us who have been running games for 30 years adapt to Dungeon World's paradigm. It's a remarkable achievement, and the authors should be proud.

I think that running DW for several weeks has helped make me a better DM overall. And when we go back to D&D soon, I'll be able to take the lessons I learned from this game and use them in my "normal" campaigns. This will stay on my shelf as an interlude; I can't wait to run it more, and my players can't wait to play more. I'm incredibly glad I took the plunge.

Added 3/26/13: Some quick notes if you pick this up and get a bit confused...
(1) The DM does not roll dice for his "moves." The players' own rolls contribute to finding out what happens. You can roll your own damage, but I prefer to have my players roll for the damage they take. Monsters never roll for "Hack & Slash" or anything like that.
(2) There is no initiative. Action in combat is an extension of the rest of the game - a conversation of sorts, with the GM moderating. The DM "throws" the narrative from player to player as appropriate. This is also how the DM can make fights harder or easier.
(3) Put the narrative first. Make it matter. But as a DM, look through your own Moves for inspiration. Use "soft moves" to move the story along and use "hard moves" for consequences.
(4) The stuff about Fronts? It's confusing at first, but it'll enhance every game you run from here on out. It's a great way of thinking about long-term campaigns.

I might add more as I think of them.

Many exciting fresh ideas, but not all shine
By John Garrison
I'm a little torn on Dungeon World. It is an excellent game with many clever ideas, however it often changes too much and in the end feels a bit too "light" for my tastes.

The dynamic, key feature of the game is really amazing, and leads to some great combats with much less frustration over rules minutiae bogging things down. The succeed/partial success/failure mechanic is subtle yet very powerful, and quite elegant. There are various ways your character's alignment actually comes into play mechanically, and having character back-stories and the heroes' relationships work into the experience reward system is clever and useful.

There really are many fresh, neat ideas in here, and most of them work very smoothly. I can see myself picking and choosing from them to include in my other games. One limitation is that the GM and players may find it difficult to be creative all the time; the juice of the game is keeping an exciting (or at least interesting) narrative going, and the group may get tired a bit quicker than usual. For example, if your average RPG session runs 4 hours, expect to want to break after 3 (or even less).

Despite its great ideas, there are a few things that fall flat for me. One issue is that everything has the same difficulty. The core mechanic involves rolling 2d6 and adding an applicable ability modifier; a result of 10 or more is success. This means that there are relatively few ways you can change the difficulty.

For example, no matter how tough the monster, you will always hit them with a 10. Instead of adding to the difficulty to be hit, armor acts as damage reduction. This certainly makes sense, and is a valid alternative, but doing things this way takes away a certain crunchiness to combat which I feel is important to the feel of the game. If you want to make a task harder, the only way to do so is to make the consequences of failure more dire. More damage, a bigger change in an NPCs attitude, less treasure, and so on. The result is that bigger enemies and more tricky or dangerous situations are not harder per se. Instead, there is just more on the line if you fail.

Again, this a valid way of working out a game's mechanics, and a fairly logical way. However the end result leaves you feeling that your character does not improve. They just go up against more unforgiving obstacles.

While some people have praised the simplified layout and tone of the book, it seems overly oriented towards those who have never played an RPG before. That's all well and good, but honestly if that was their target audience they could have streamlined the book a lot more.

If you're familiar with fantasy RPGs you will find some very clever and useful ideas to borrow for your next game. You will probably even enjoy playing a full Dungeon World game for a while. Most of the book won't be that new to you though. (The usual character classes, spells, and monsters are all old hat at this point.) If you're fairly new to RPGs, this may be just the thing you need to get in strong and get excited without being overwhelmed. But at over 400 pages, it probably could have been just a little more efficient.

Great, easy to learn pen and paper game
By Jay
Great, easy to learn pen and paper game, perfect for someone just getting into the world of tabletop gaming. The instruction manual was straightforward, and a great read. I could barely put the book down the first time I went through it! Without any prior gaming experience, I was able to run a campaign with 5 friends in a week or so. Dungeon World seems to be built upon making the rules seem to be secondary to the fun, storytelling side of the game. If we made a mistake during the game, we wove it into the story and did not let it disrupt the adventure.

Pros:
-Amazingly fun game
-Easy to learn and execute, even within a short time frame.
-Endless worlds to explore and create

Cons:
-The book has a decent amount of Examples illustrating specific mechanisms, but a longer, more complete example might be nice.

Please, if you are thinking about playing a pen and paper RPG but are intimidated by the rules of D&D and Pathfinder, I strongly urge you to pick this up. I am so glad I did.
