I can say without a doubt that I was made to be in a classroom. I followed the footsteps of my father, a 35-year middle school math teaching veteran, into this challenging yet rewarding career. My college experience began as a community college student at Lakeland College in Mattoon, Illinois. From there, I received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Eastern Illinois University and a Master of Science in Mathematics from Southern Illinois University. I accepted a tenure-track faculty position at Parkland College, where I have taught developmental and college-level courses for 15 years. I had the opportunity to begin writing textbooks shortly after I started teaching at Parkland. My then department chair and mentor, James W. Hall, and I co-authored several textbooks in Beginning and Intermediate Algebra. In the fall of 2011, our department began discussing the idea of creating two tracks through our beginning and intermediate algebra courses. The idea stemmed from two issues. First, most of our beginning and intermediate algebra students were headed to either our Liberal Arts Math or our Introduction to Statistics course. Second, we wanted to beef up intermediate algebra to better prepare those students who were headed to college algebra. These were two competing ideas! Increasing the algebraic rigor of these courses seemed to “punish” students who were not heading to college algebra. With the two track system, we implemented a solution that best serves both groups of students. I have to admit that I was initially concerned that offering an alternate path through developmental mathematics for students not planning to take college algebra would lead to a lowering of standards. However, my participation in our committee investigating this idea led me to believe it was possible to offer a rigorous course that was exceedingly more appropriate for this group of students. Since there were no materials for the course, I began creating my own and was paired by McGraw Hill with Dave Sobecki. Together, we have created the material that I have been using for class testing. After a semester and a half of piloting these materials and seeing the level of enthusiasm and engagement in the mathematical conversations of my students, I am now convinced that this is an ideal course to refine and offer. As a trusted colleague told me, “this is just a long overdue idea.” Outside of the classroom and away from the computer, I am kept educated, entertained and ever-busy my wonderful wife, Nikki, and our two children, Charlotte, 6 and Jake, 5. I am an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoy playing recreational softball and golf in the summertime with colleagues and friends.

When I rented it they said I would have it ...

When I rented it they said I would have it until December 6 (the end of the school semester) then they sent me an email on Nov. 6 telling that my last day to have the book was Nov 7 and wanted me to pay more money to extend the rental. This is a scam and a rip off. They know that you will need it until the end of the semester and advertise that you will have it until the end of the semester then half way through the take it away and hit you up for more money. Don't ever rent school books from them.

Very interesting, highly unusual!

Cured is a remarkable book about quite incredible science....and a pretty good story to boot. Natalia Holt has done some very good research here. One of the things, perhaps the most interesting, that she's found is that the best work, the most creative, most daring, most cutting edge work on HIV (and a host of other diseases, too) is not being done by the big corporations, the big pharma companies.
Just the opposite is at work, the innovative research is being done mostly by small biotech companies, such as Sangamo Biotech, in Richmond, California. They are using something called ZFNs, zinc finger nuclease. As I understand it there were some small villages in Europe where over many years, whenever the Black Plague or similar terrible things struck, killing off millions of people, the people from these small towns were spared, they didn't get sick.
Something in their makeup was protecting them, and over the years scientists studied these people in these villages, looking for what it was that made them different, that protected them. One of the things they found was a small finger-shaped growth on blood cells, one that was high in zinc, and thus the name ZFNs, zinc finger nuclease's. Sangamo has been working on refining this ZFN technique for a couple of decades now, and suddenly they're starting to make it work! Quite exciting stuff really, that could indeed change modern medicine.
Cured should be read more....it's a fine book, clearly written; difficult science explained in a clean, clear easy to understand way. An important book, highly recommended!

Great Book for science students or anyone who is interested

This is actually my first amazon review, this book is so good that I decided to write my first (I am only 1/3 into the book). As a science student, I am able to understand most of what Dr. Holt is talking about. She presented the history and anecdotes in a casual story-telling manner. For layman who has no background knowledge in biology, she added illustrations and tried to use analogy to explain the biological mechanism.

This is a great book for anyone who wants to understand the history and science of HIV/AIDS.

Kudos for Dr. Holt

This book is so well written that I felt compelled to read it in 48 hours.
The book is clear and concise, and perfectly understandable to the layman.
I have been reading on this topic daily and this is the first I heard of the "berlin patient", cured by early intervention.
Nathalia brings each patient to life and shows how hard this disease makes their lives.

fair at best

This book might be fine for someone that's a novice on the subject, and is looking for nothing deeper than a beginner's introduction to the topic area. But if you're a hard core design engineer like myself, and you're looking to learn the in's and out's of serious plastic component design, you just won't find it in this book. Mine is the second review here on this book, so I got to find out the hard way.

The power of words

In this booklet, Hagin talks about the power of words. According to the Bible, WORDS destroy us or make us full of life, happiness, and health. Our words, the words we spoke yesterday, make life what it is today.

In Mark 11:23, Jesus said, "For verily I say unto you, that whoever shall SAY unto this mountain, Be though removed, and be though cast into the sea, and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he SAITH shall come to pass, he shall have whatever he SAITH."

He shall have whatsoever - THE WORDS - he speaks.

Hagin mentions that when he was healing himself from seemingly incurable health problems, it wasn't enough that he believed in his heart that he was healed, he realized that he also had to voice his belief, so he was repeating,

:I believe I receive healing for my deformed heart. I believe I receive healing for the incurable blood disease. I believe I receive healing for the paralysis. I believe I receive healing from the top of my head to the soles of my feet."

And within the hour, he was standing on his feet. What he doesn't mention in this booklet, but mentioned in his other books, that after he believed, and voiced his belief, nothing happened until he realized that he also had to demonstrate his faith - he had to act on that confession that he has already been healed.

However, this booklet is focused on the power of words, and he makes many good points. If you've ever listened to the sick person or the person who is suffering from some kind of lack, you can many times find out why they are sick and why they lack what they need by listening to how they speak about themselves and their needs. If they keep repeating "I don't have it ..." they're likely not going to have it.

Proverbs 12:18 says "... the tongue of the wise is health." You're not going to have health unless you talk health.

The Bible says "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly". (Ps. 1:1) You do not want to think like the world thinks.

Verse 2 says, "And be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." Do not think like the world. They think negatively.

If you want health, you should decide to talk health, and say something along the lines.

"I talk health. I believe in healing. I believe in health. "

Speak words that strengthen you.

Proverbs 18:21 says "Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof."

Proverbs 21:23 "Whosoever keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles."

The words you speak identify you.
The words you speak set the boundaries of your life.

life and death are in the power of the tongue....and this little book packs a wallop. I have given this book to many people who used words casually and thoughtlessly. Not that I have arrived, but this book tells us we will be held accountable for every idle word we speak on the earth because our words have so much impact on the world around us. They are equivelant to gold and we can spend them on good works or evil intent. Blessings to you on your journey of becoming Christ like...love ,k

A great guide to reaching the next level in your Jira implementation

Mastering Jira is an excellent guide to reaching the “next level” in understanding Jira to meet the needs of your organization. The book provides a comprehensive overview of virtually all the areas you need to cover to build your Jira instance maintain it. Some of the areas of interest I found immediately was the importation of CSV files into Jira using Javascript to show and hide fields based, and the use of built-in Notifications to make useful communication at any stage of a workflow in the issue lifecycle.

Achieving a balance in any given book is difficult. If there is too little coverage on a topic, the book does not have enough material to “master” the topic, if there is too much coverage on one single topic, the title is out of reach for someone getting starting and attempting to learn the application. I found that Mastering Jira I found was adept in achieving a balanced approach.

The only area that was covered in perhaps too much depth early was the Jira SDK discussion. Granted a further discussion of this is found at the end of the book, but a user covering the many topics Jira touches (Agile, JQL, Workflows, etc.) will probably have enough to learn and likely will not want to begin building their own plugins right away. On the other hand, a discussion about the Jira installation would not be complete without addressing the issue of development.

Why this book? You can find a lot of information on the web with regard to Jira. The real beauty of this text is all of the essentials are here in one location. As far as some unique aspects to the book, I found the use of graphs and screen shots to illustrate various topics was outstanding. The author also covers (though almost never discussed on the web) how to document your Jira instance and even conduct a business needs (Requirements) analysis that will make your Jira project match up what the user(s) requested. Lastly, the author provides wide variety of ways to create reports and suggests several use cases to assist the user in modelling and integrating Jira into a business environment.

JIRA is an excellent tool, but to use it effectively one needs to see it through the eyes of experienced administrators who manage JIRA in complex corporate environments. Mastering JIRA introduces a reader to a strategy of using JIRA and to best practices. There are many ways to use JIRA, interact with it and improve it, but the most difficult part of any way is to know that there’s a way and to make the first step, and this book allows reader to make a lot of first steps in a ways that uncover real power of JIRA. Apart from covering most essential plugins as Agile and Script Runner it also shows some tricks employed by administrators and designers. A Crucial and Careful Study

This is a patient, exhaustive and exacting ethnographic study. It forces one to think at once about social welfare policies, ideas of drug treatment, the limits and potentials of language and, maybe most of all, about the daily struggles of so many U.S. institutions charged with undoing addiction and dependency. The book's own careful act of undoing is in its thorough deconstruction of the assumed divide between therapist and client in such institutions. Instead of the addict-in-denial and the therapist determining "Truth," this book shows clients acutely aware of the roles they are expected to play and the language they are expected to use - to keep their kids, to stay in the program, to have a roof over their heads - while we see, in sometimes excruciating detail, the lengths therapists are forced to go to maintain their program's funding and bolster their own "authority." Everyone interested in poverty and policy, therapeutic regimens, political agency and semiotics and institutions should read and consider this ethnography.

Insightful and True

This was a compelling read. Compassionate as well, smartly written, indeed illuminating on this subject that begs such exploration. Carr's book not only turns an anthropological eye on drug treatment, it treats the overlap of language and drug addicts and politics with the respect required to be properly understood. This is thorough work, while at the same time most engaging. Highly recommended, intriguing and an absolutely necessary read for anyone looking to explore this most topical of subject matters. This book hits all the marks.

First Impressions

Ms. Carr has certainly done her research well, is very familiar with addiction treatment. How language is used in the subject of study she generalizes to other addiction treatment settings. She says at the heart of the treatment approach is a ritualized language the counselors use to indoctrinate the clients in treatment. If the clients "flip the script" they can sound like they're getting it. In other words, they can fake it, like one client, Nikki, does in the book. Yes, the author is absolutely right, that's talking the talk. Experienced addiction counselors know that clients who are truly in a process of change become willing to do the hard work recovery requires. She raises the interesting question of whether treatment produces real change or not.
