Paradigm Islands: Manhattan and Venice: Discourses on Architecture and the City, by Teresa Stoppani

Concerning architecture and the city, built, imagined and narrated, this book focuses on Manhattan and Venice, but considers architecture as an intellectual and spatial process rather than a product.

A critical look at the making of Manhattan and Venice provides a background to addressing the dynamic redefinition and making of space today. The gradual processes of adjustment, the making of a constantly changing dense space, the emphasis on forming rather than on figure, the incorporation of new forms and languages through their adaptation and transformation, make both Manhattan and Venice, in different ways, the ideal places to contextualize and address the issue of an architecture of the dynamic.

For any feminist collection!

Great essays in feminism. I advise any modern day feminist to read. It has great ideas that the individual can take in and help to understand the world around them and how women can/have to navigate through them.

Every feminist and every philosopher should read this book
By A Customer
I use "The Politics of Reality" as the primary textbook for my course on philosophical issues in feminism. Frye is extremely lucid and intelligent; beginning students appreciate her useful analogies and well-structured essays, and I still get something new out of the book every time I read it. Her discussions of the difference between oppression and suffering, the purpose of sex-marking (i.e. behavior that informs others of one's sex), coercion, love, why lesbians scare the hell out of some people, and the meaning of anger are among the best I'm aware of, and her analysis of oppression provides a wonderful framework for understanding social realities. One of her themes is the importance of radical imagination; Frye's book itself goes a long way towards helping readers envision a more just world in which women are free, independent subjects, rather than enslaved objects who are shaped to the service of men. Frye is an outstanding philosopher, an excellent writer, and an inspiration to all feminist thinkers, as well as to anyone interested in the liberation of all those who are oppressed. I only wish I'd read her books (check out "Willful Virgin") a few years earlier!

Oops!
By SoulBoyJon
I think what the last reviewer didn't understand is that no men are oppressed on the basis of their maleness, therefore they are not oppressed as men. They can be oppressed by homophobia which sees femininity in a man as a weakness, they can be oppressed by class, race, religion, etc...but not on the basis of being a man.
Oppression happens to individuals, but not individually. People who belong to certain groups can be oppressed as a result of their group membership or perceived group membership, but there is a difference between oppression and suffering.
That said, this book is brilliant and heavily cited in works by other genius thinkers and in my own personal life.

Adopted Son: Washington, Lafayette, and the Friendship that Saved the Revolution, by David A. Clary

They were unlikely comrades-in-arms. One was a self-taught, middle-aged Virginia planter in charge of a ragtag army of revolutionaries, the other a rich, glory-seeking teenage French aristocrat. But the childless Washington and the orphaned Lafayette forged a bond between them as strong as any between father and son. It was an unbreakable trust that saw them through betrayals, shifting political alliances, and the trials of war.

Lafayette came to America a rebellious youth whose defiance of his king made him a celebrity in France. His money and connections attracted the favor of the Continental Congress, which advised Washington to keep the exuberant Marquis from getting himself killed. But when the boy-general was wounded in his first battle, he became a hero of two countries. As the war ground on, Washington found in his young charge the makings of a courageous and talented commander whose loyalty, generosity, and eagerness to please his Commander in Chief made him one of the war’s most effective and inspired generals. Lafayette’s hounding of Cornwallis’s army was the perfect demonstration of Washington’s unconventional “bush-fighting” tactics, and led to the British surrender at Yorktown.

Their friendship continued throughout their lives. Lafayette inspired widespread French support for a struggling young America and personally influenced Washington’s antislavery views. Washington’s enduring example as general and statesman guided Lafayette during France’s own revolution years later.

Using personal letters and other key historical documents, Adopted Son offers a rare glimpse of the American Revolution through the friendship between Washington and Lafayette. It offers dramatic accounts of battles and intimate portraits of such major figures as Alexander Hamilton, Benedict Arnold, and Benjamin Franklin. The result is a remarkable, little-known epic of friendship, revolution, and the birth of a nation.

From Publishers Weekly
Personal friends and political allies, George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette had one of the most important friendships of the 18th century. In this enjoyable study, Clary (The Place Where Hell Bubbled Up: A History of the First National Park) argues that although each man was a hero of the American Revolution, it was their partnership that secured American victory. Both men were orphans, and their devotion to each other was motivated by a deep psychological bond. As the title suggests, Washington was something of a father figure to the younger Frenchman, and Lafayette gave the general "unwavering loyalty, truly filial devotion." But the mentoring was not wholly one-sided: Lafayette was committed to the abolition of slavery, and Clary suggests that it was because of Lafayette's influence that Washington chose to free his slaves on his wife's death. The chapters on Lafayette's role in the French Revolution and Washington's anguish over Lafayette's imprisonment make this book far broader than the usual 1776 account. Occasionally, Clary gives over to cutesy Frenchisms (about Lafayette being wounded at the Battle of Brandywine, he writes, "If this was martial glory, très bien"). Still, on the whole, Clary has satisfyingly woven together grand military history with an intimate portrait of deep affection. Illus. (Feb. 6)

From Booklist
In 1777 a wealthy 19-year-old nobleman from France presented his untested military services to the Continental army. Prudent as always, Washington tried the kid out as an aide before consenting to a command for Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de la Fayette. After proving his courage with a severe wounding at that year's Battle of Brandywine Creek, Lafayette was on his way to the military glory he sought, and the Americans had in him an advocate for French intervention against the British, which they sought. As Clary shows from the extensive correspondence that Washington and Lafayette conducted, their relationship deepened into an unabashedly paternal-filial one. His work's tone captures the sincere mutual solicitude that arose between the two, characterized by gratitude from Washington for Lafayette's personal loyalty, and by near idolization of Washington by Lafayette. Clary acquits himself well in narrating the military action of the major battles in which Lafayette commanded: Monmouth in 1778 and Yorktown in 1781. Portraying youth learning from experience, Clary's history will deservedly tap the readership for the War of Independence. Gilbert Taylor

Review
“Few stories in American history are more intriguing, or touching, than that of the bond that developed between General Washington and the Marquis d’Lafayette. With verve and charm, David Clary shows how the childless Washington, who felt betrayed by many of the men who surrounded him, and Lafayette, who never knew his father and lusted for glory and the chance to help the American cause, drew close in a loving and trusting relationship. With his engaging style, Clary succeeds in bringing to life Lafayette and Washington, and also in acquainting readers with America’s great and, at times seemingly forlorn, struggle for independence.”
—John Ferling, author of A Leap in the Dark: The Struggle to Create the American Republic

“As Clary shows from the extensive correspondence that Washington and Lafayette conducted, their relationship deepened into an unabashedly paternal-filial one.... Portraying youth learning from experience, Clary’s history will deservedly tap the readership of the War of Independence.” ––Booklist

"A beautifully crafted, insightful study of the deeply intertwined lives of Washington and Lafayette, two key figures in the transforming age of revolution." —Susan Dunn, author of Sister Revolutions: French Lightning, American Light

“A finely researched work on the sometimes awkward, often endearing, and ultimately historic relation between two great leaders.” —James MacGregor Burns, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Roosevelt: Soldier of Freedom, and George Washington

"David Clary's Adopted Son is a fascinating account of the relationship between Washington who lacked a son and young Lafayette, who lacked a father. It was a warm, affectionate connection that was greatly satisfying to both men, one that significantly strengthened France's commitment to America during our War...

A Very Long-Winded Take on an Interesting Relationship
By kahemingway
After reading another book about Lafayette, and having previously been interested in his relationship with George Washington, I decided this looked like something that I would enjoy reading. While I learned a lot from the book and there were many memorable moments, the book also has certain drawbacks.

The book actually starts off by depicting the scene between Washington and Lafayette after the battle of Monmouth, in which the pair sat on top of Washington's cloak and fell asleep side by side. From there, it details first Washington's then Lafayette's early lives before they met in 1777 and documents the many parts both men played in the American Revolution. After the war is over, the book mainly focuses on Lafayette's various political and diplomatic escapades in France. It includes some information about Lafayette's return to America in 1824 for the fiftieth anniversary of the American Revolution before finally wrapping up with his death in 1834.

I'll start with the good parts about this book. There is a plethora of information about both George Washington and Lafayette in terms of their roles in the American Revolution and what happened to them after it was all over. The portrayal of the genuinely affectionate relationship between these two orphans from different backgrounds is touching and it makes these two great men seem more human. The book also comes with a number of illustrations and pictures of the people the book is discussing. It was a nice addition that gave a few visuals to a book full of names, dates and places. I certainly learned a lot not just about Washington and Lafayette, but many other players in the American Revolution as well.

On the downside, however, this book is mired down with far too many details. I would have liked this book more if it had focused more on just the relationship between Lafayette and Washington, as it had a tendency to deviate from the pair in question as more and more people were introduced. In addition, it takes a few chapters before you get to the point where Lafayette and Washington actually meet and interact with each other, which was the reason I wanted to read this book in the first place. In short, I think some of the content could have been trimmed down and the book would have been better for it.

That being said, this is a very informative book. I did learn a lot of things I didn't know about the two of them by reading it and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Washington and Lafayette's relationship. If you don't mind reading some wordy and dense material, it is likely you will enjoy this book as well.

Story of Lafayette and his relationship with the man he revered
By Lawrence M. Purdy
"Adopted Son: Washington, Lafayette, and the Friendship that Saved the Revolution" by author David A. Cleary gives us a masterfully researched narrative, providing insight presented with incredible detail. The story of the teen aged general from France who disobeys everyone in his country, from his father-in-law to his king, to set out in defense of liberty and in search of glory reads like an adventure novel. Cleary relates the story of how the orphaned Lafayette, in search of a father, bonds with the orphaned Washington, in search of a son. That neither were conscious of their search makes the bond they formed with one another that much more endearing.

Cleary does a very fine job of showing how Lafayette loved Washington, and of how Washington loved him back. The level of trust that Washington placed in Lafayette, especially in the time leading up to the decisive battle at Yorktown, was sobering. That Lafayette often was not able to be told the reasons behind many of his orders, but followed blindly nonetheless knowing that his `father' would never lead him astray, was at times touching.

It would be very easy to write a book on Lafayette describing only his highlights. How he was wounded in his first battle, and adored thereafter. How he was a hero in his adopted country even more so than in his homeland. How he fought for the end of slavery (and convinced his adopted father that slavery should be abolished). But to dwell only on the positive would not tell the whole story of Lafayette. Indeed, it is his flaws, especially those revealed much later in his life, that make the man human, and through contrast give his heroics more weight. The closing chapters of the book, and the closing chapters of Lafayette's life show a man who, anxious for the liberation of his own country, often finds himself at odds with the very people he is trying to liberate.

The American Revolution needed Washington in order to succeed. Washington needed Lafayette in order to succeed. That Lafayette was, by far, the most influential person when it came to France giving pivotal aid to the American cause of liberty cannot be understated. Without this aid, it is difficult to imagine a way that Washington succeeds.

An inspiring read containing a bibliography of source material that I know I will refer to again and again. 4.5 stars out of 5-stars.

I have learned more about both Washington and Lafayette by reading this book. It is a slow read as there are many quotes and parts of letters by both Washington and Lafayette in the book as well as some from their contemporaries. These are in the language of the time and in Lafayette's case English was his second language. It is well worth the effort for the value.

Foucault For Beginners, by Lydia Alix Fillingham

Michel Foucault's work has profoundly affected the teaching of such diverse disciplines as literary criticism, criminology, and gender studies. Arguing that definitions of abnormal behavior are culturally constructed, Foucault explored the unfair division between those who meet and those who deviate from social norms. Foucault's deeply visual sense of scenes such as ritual public executions, lends itself well to Moshe Süsser's dramatic illustrations.

Hardly half-an-hors-d-oeuvres worth...
By Mark Nadja
+ I know this is only supposed to be a beginner's introduction to the work of a notoriously difficult thinker, but this is No-cal Foucault Lite, the rice-cake of primers, so airy its hardly there at all.

+ First thing I'd like to know is who is the author? I mean, I see her name on the book but darned if I could find a bio or any credentials for her listed in the book. I'd like to think she had some...credentials, I mean...and wasn't just a hungry freelance writer with no special knowledge of Foucault who offered to pen a Foucault guide on the quick.

+ Because that's pretty much what this book reads like.

+ Well, whoever the author is, she seemed to resent that Foucault, being gay, didn't have enough to say explicitly about women and she felt compelled to point that out in annoying and unnecessary introjections throughout the text.

+ Do not pay the cover price for this book. It's simply not worth it. You could read it in the bookstore while your kid is enjoying Waldo Storytime or whatever in the children's section. Or pick it up, used, for a dollar somewhere. I'd say this is the rule of thumb with any of these "for beginner's" guides, but especially so in this case.

+ In fact, you likely could garner as much information about Foucault reading the back covers of his books--maybe even more.

+ The more of this review I write the more I realize how poor this book was and how dissatisfied I was with it. It's losing stars faster than a wax museum on fire. I can't truthfully say that it was a waste of time to read, because it hardly took any time at all to read. But if I opened the book knowing one scintilla's worth of knowledge of Foucault I closed it hardly knowing one-thousandth of a micron more.

+ In other words, I'm pretty much just as stupid as I was before which made reading this book kind of pointless.

Yes, It Really Is For Beginners
By John Roberson
This is by far the best intro to Foucault I've read. Thinking like Foucault use lots of complex language and have really complex ideas, but this book explains those ideas in a very easy-to-understand way. It's short, so you'll be finished quickly, but you will get a really good (introductory) sense of Foucault's entire project. That sense will stick with you pretty well, too, because every page is illustrated. This is an important thinker, and I can't imagine a better introduction. Read it.

Interesting Simple Intro
By therosen
As a beginner, the book presents Foucault as a documenter - discussing and disecting the history of power and professional relations. He covers knowledge and power, sexuality, prisons, mental health.... The span is enormous, highlighting Foucault's multidisciplinary reputation.

The downside of the book (indeed a limit of the Manga-like series) is it spends too much time on Foucault's role as as a chronicler of data, and leaves the reader on their own for much of his conclusions. An example: the book talks of Foucault's description of the medical clinic and doctor's "Gaze" but the book doesn't share if Foucault thought this was good or bad. Given Foucault's well deserved reputation as a complicated writer, this beginner could use the help.

The War on Alcohol: Prohibition and the Rise of the American State, by Lisa McGirr

A groundbreaking history of Prohibition and a new creation story for the powerful American state.

Prohibition has long been portrayed as a “noble experiment” that failed, a newsreel story of glamorous gangsters, flappers, and speakeasies. Now at last Lisa McGirr dismantles this cherished myth to reveal a much more significant history. Prohibition was the seedbed for a pivotal expansion of the federal government, the genesis of our contemporary penal state. Her deeply researched, eye-opening account uncovers patterns of enforcement still familiar today: the war on alcohol was waged disproportionately in African American, immigrant, and poor white communities. Alongside Jim Crow and other discriminatory laws, Prohibition brought coercion into everyday life and even into private homes. Its targets coalesced into an electoral base of urban, working-class voters that propelled FDR to the White House.

This outstanding history also reveals a new genome for the activist American state, one that shows the DNA of the right as well as the left. It was Herbert Hoover who built the extensive penal apparatus used by the federal government to combat the crime spawned by Prohibition. The subsequent federal wars on crime, on drugs, and on terror all display the inheritances of the war on alcohol. McGirr shows the powerful American state to be a bipartisan creation, a legacy not only of the New Deal and the Great Society but also of Prohibition and its progeny.

The War on Alcohol is history at its best―original, authoritative, and illuminating of our past and its continuing presence today.

Review
“In this remarkable book, Lisa McGirr transforms our understanding of Prohibition and its legacy. Moving beyond familiar tales of speakeasies and gangland violence, she shows how this episode contributed to the expansion of the authority of the modern American state and the origins of mass imprisonment. No history could be more timely.” (Eric Foner, author of Gateway to Freedom)

“McGirr’s book, fascinating and deeply researched, offers a startlingly fresh argument for why so many of our current problems―from the war on drugs to mass incarceration―grow out of Prohibition. Anyone who wants to understand the 1920s, 1930s, and 2000s should read this book.” (Jonathan Alter, author of The Defining Moment)

“This is not just the best book ever written about the era of Prohibition; it is a landmark history of modern America. With splendid insight and illuminating details, Lisa McGirr demonstrates that the war on alcohol was the health of the state.” (Michael Kazin, author of American Dreamers)

“In her revelatory new book, Lisa McGirr moves Prohibition from the gin-soaked edges of the Roaring Twenties to the heart of the American state.” (Kevin Boyle, author of Arc of Justice)

“[A] fascinating account of Prohibition and its consequences, written with verve, depth, and imagination.” (Ira Katznelson, author of Fear Itself)

“Lisa McGirr has given us an admirably fresh look at a supposedly shopworn subject. She convincingly demonstrates that the Prohibition era deserves to be taken seriously as the nursery of many stubbornly persistent practices, including a moralizing, meddlesome state that targets its punitive powers on the least-advantaged citizens.” (David M. Kennedy, author of Freedom from Fear)

Lisa McGirr is professor of history at Harvard University. She is the author of The War on Alcohol and an award-winning history of the new right, Suburban Warriors. She and her family live in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The War on Alcohol ...alcohol won!
By Carl Rennhack
I was in the fourth grade (in 1960) when I first heard about Prohibition. As soon as I did I made a beeline for Grandpa Rennhack's apartment (right above where Mom & I lived) and asked the soon-to-retire Rheingold Brewery worker how did he (and his father) fare between January 1920 and December 1933. "Gramp & me made near-beer, less than 0.5% alcohol. We drove it to flower stores, drug stores, pool halls. What happened to it after that didn't concern us." But Ms. McGirr reminds us it concerned a lot of people on both sides of one of the most unpopular laws in USofA history. Its effects are still felt in 2015. Most of the people who lived through Prohibition have passed on, ergo we need books like this one to tell the story of a seemingly unbelievable era...although I've no doubt Grandpa and Gramp could have added more to the story! Read this book as an introduction to the subject.

Terrific insights
By Jon Hunt
"The social experiment that didn't work" is how many people remember or were taught about prohibition. In her wonderful book, "The War on Alcohol", Lisa McGirr delves into what prohibition meant and what it also did to people. Perhaps the most underscored part of the book is what prohibition did to crime and the increased levels of arrest and incarceration that often followed. But the author relates how prohibition affected women and minorities...i.e. how many poor women had their own stills to garner extra income.

The political shift from the working class from the Republicans to the Democrats is also well-documented. With President Hoover's wish to crack down harder on enforcement he left the door open to a whole new order of people who helped elect FDR in 1932. "The War on Alcohol" is superbly written and I highly recommend it.

The War on Alcohol, Prohibition and the rise of the American State by Lisa McGirr
Ms. Lisa McGirr has produced a historical account of prohibition and its effect on the American people.
Filled with references and comments, it is not a book to read without attention and with determination.

Minorities such as immigrants and blacks were targeted, as the majority of Americans believed that these foreigners were responsible for the ills that alcohol caused. It is true that immigration from European countries caused an increase in the numbers of the alcohol imbibing public. This was/is part of their homeland experience. It is also true that the number of saloons increased and did the uncontrolled drinking. Drunkenness among the immigrants was seen as an increase of abandonment of families, theft and destruction of public property. A very important effect of the saloons was the gathering of immigrants to organize into political parties to obtain a voice in America.

A constitutional amendment was voted into the law to stop drinking and its evils. No one considered or understood the implications, one of which was the “rise of collusion among police, grafters and gangsters.” (164) Many enforcers used this amendment to harass immigrants and blacks. The KKK was born and “run” by deeply prejudiced people who saw this was the way to attack blacks and immigrants.
In the South, many immigrants fled north or west to save their lives and whatever monies they had. Unfortunately, Black felt stuck on their lands and did not flee as readily. The numbers of crimes committed increased so that state prisons were filled to overflowing.

Herbert Hoover, elected president in 1928, appalled by the increase in lawlessness in the country began drawing all power of enforcement to the federal government. He commissioned studies to discern the nature of the problems of crime. Although many writers included the plight of the uneducated black, few listened. Their recommendations included many of those which are recommended today, the main one being the security of employment. Instead, Hoover instituted the national penal system, which gave the national and local government greater control/coercion over the populace. Unfortunately, Hoover did nothing to help the masses of Americans suffering through the Great Depression. It took the Roosevelt administration to deal with the crises after Prohibition repealed.

As an aside, Ms. McGirr does not mention the advance of crime becoming organized as a result of Prohibition. People wanted their drink. Criminals were happy to provide bootleg whisky. Their bosses ruled who got when, where and how. They compromised police and local and state government and other officials. They also gave us legends as like Bonnie and Clyde, the Hole in the Wall Gang, Dutch Schultz, and Al Capone and Bugs Moran.

Ms. McGirr’s work would have been strengthened, if she has included this side of the Prohibition saga
For those who have had scant reading in this fascinating period of American history, the book’s information is clearly written, annotated and discussed.

Best Resource for active Diabetics, focusing on facts and proven successful strategies.
By John Venditti
As a trainer and diabetic, this book was exactly what I'd been hoping for. Several books exist that touch on the issues diabetic athletes or even fitness enthusiasts face, but none go in great detail. Phil actually takes the time to break it down and talk about specific problems, strategies, and systems that affect active diabetic people. He gives you the tools to bring your A game to training, diet, and blood sugar management - all key aspects to achieving your goals.

What's also great about this text is that it is not only a resource for diabetics themselves, but also fitness professionals who work with diabetics. Knowing the barebones facts about diabetes may not be enough to train diabetics to their fullest potential. It is important to know how to optimize training for all clients.

Lastly, Phil backs his statements up with research. And that's really admirable. No BS claims, no feel good fluff, no guru-ism. Objective science and facts. If his opinion is included it is explicitly stated as such. This is something we can all appreciate.
