Distills the causes of wars down to an abacus paradigm

Mr. Blainy creates an interesting abacus paradigm, which he uses to explain why wars occur. Some of the factors, that are modeled as column on the abacus, are the perceived power of the antagonists, the perceived availability of allies, and a grab bag of 'other causes' such as distracting the populous from domestic concerns. These factors have different weight for different nations. Wars are caused when the sum of the factors for war exceed a certain threshold that can also vary from case to case.

One other interesting thought he inspects is the method in determining the causes of wars. Traditionally he argues the cause of war was determined by what goes on prior to the war. This is more difficult, because these factors are colored by the perceptions of the various actors, and often contain misconceptions. Blainey, a conservative social historian, writes one of the best non-ideological, empirically based analyses of why nation-states go to war -- and peace. Logically, the causes for going to war should be mirrored in the reasons why nations make peace at the end of war. Blainey explains why Kissinger's "balance of power" notions are not rules, or even guiding principles. This book will change your mind about war.

I recently took a class on war, and this book was used as one of the textbooks. After reading this book, my entire preception of war has changed. Mr. Blainey has shown me so much that I never even thought about before. Not only that, but he exposes several myths about wars. For example, some people believe that wars can happen by accident. Blainey even puts up a good argument for it, but in the end, he explains why that is folly. It is truly an excelent book that I would recommend to anyone interested in war.

Computational simulations are designed in which the logical operators are learned by associating their phonological form with some degree of correlation in the inputs, so that the overall function of the system is as a simple kind of pattern recognition. Several learning rules are assayed, especially those of the Hebbian sort, which are the ones with the most neurological support. Learning vector quantization (LVQ) is shown to be a perspicuous and efficient means of learning the patterns that are of interest. Finally, the analogies between early vision and the logical operators allow us to advance the claim of cognitive linguistics that language is not processed by proprietary algorithms, but rather by algorithms that are general to the entire brain. Thus in the debate between objectivist and experiential metaphysics, this book falls squarely into the camp of the latter. Yet it does so by means of a rigorous formal, mathematical, and neurological exposition – in contradiction of the experiential claim that formal analysis has no place in the understanding of cognition. To make our own counter-claim as explicit as possible, we present a sketch of the LVQ structure in terms of mereotopology, in which the initial layer of the network performs topological operations, while the final layer performs mereological operations.

This is a good resource if you want to get into Event Planning, or have found yourself in an Event Planning job, and want to learn about the core process, and get some tips for managing the process and increasing your professionalism. There aren't many event coordinating books out there that aren't totally outdated, but this is a good one. If you're looking at it, you should probably get it.

A must-have for every sewing room!

This book is amazing -- it definitely lives up to its tagline: the ultimate dressmaking guide. This book goes beyond the pattern pieces and how to mix them. With clear line drawings and easy to understand written instructions, the author shows you how to alter pattern pieces to achieve your desired look. The hardest decision was to figure out which dress I'd make first. For my first dress, I made the strapless bodice and paired it with the half-circle skirt. I've never properly fit a strapless before and it fits beautifully!!! Amazing!! I know I'll be creating custom dresses for myself for years to come.

Perfect for confident beginners and up. Patterns need to be traced and variations drafted.

This book has it all! Patterns with drafting instructions! I didn't know at first if I would like the book, as I'm a lazy seamstress and I hate tracing and drafting, but this book is a great read and offers endless options with thorough instructions. Every bodice has modification ideas . For the skirts, she has included instruction on how to make it as a standalone skirt. There are a myriad of fit adjustments included, along with your average primer on basic sewing.

I appreciate that the patterns aren't watered down. Do be warned, if you don't like tracing, you will HATE this book. The patterns are nested Burdastyle type sheets printed front and back. The larger sizes are faded out rather than different line styles. The different pattern pieces do not overlap, so it won't be too much of a pain to deal with.

Two defective copies in a row -- shame on Amazon, and on Potter Craft

The book itself is darling, but DO NOT ORDER IT FROM AMAZON! Buy it only from a bricks-and-mortar bookstore or fabric store where you can examine your copy and make sure it does not have an empty pocket in the inside back cover. That pocket should contain the paper patterns without which the rest of the book is useless. To quote from the book's section on "How to Use This Book" on p. 9: "More than 200 unique dresses can be made with the interchangeable bodice and skirt patterns, neckline templates, and sleeve patterns included in the envelope at back of the book." Which means ... no patterns = no dresses. I ordered "Sew Many Dresses" from Amazon, and it arrived with an empty pocket. I requested a replacement and returned the defective copy -- and the replacement had the same empty pocket. I am not going to try for a third time. This is NOT the author's fault, and I really enjoyed reading the book until I looked in the envelope and realized I could do nothing with Tanya Whelan's great ideas. I am very, very disappointed in Amazon, and with the publisher, Potter Craft, for such abysmal quality control.
